Lose holiday pounds
By PATRICIA M. BRAMAN Extension Agent This is the time of year we make all those New Year’s resolutions that we hope we will keep but probably won't. If one of your resolutions is to lose those extra pounds you gained during the holidays, perhaps you need to give some thought to your diet. The most common reason for going off diets is boredom Especially for the homemaker who has to prepare a wellrounded meal for her family and then serve herself a grapefruit half. There are four important steps to effective dieting if you are serious about losing weight. You should see your physician for a check up and get his approval for your diet. Secondly, set a goal for yourself. Those who are constantly on diets and never lose significantly haven't taken it seriously. Choose a holiday, birthday, special occasion or just a date that you want to f achievb losing ten or twenty pounds. It’s an incentive if you have a goal to work towards. The most difficult step in Weight reduction is to restrain your eating habits. It was your eating habits that put those extra pounds on so don't 0 diet then go back to your old eating habits and gain them back. Examine your eating pattern. Do you include manvof the low calorie fruits and vegetables? Do you snack while watching TV? Do you clean up w hat your children leave on their plates? There is really no need to exclude everything good from your diet, if you restrain your eating habits. A daily exercise routine can help you firm up as you begin to lose those extra pounds. In days gone by exercise was away of life. Today, we must make an effort tosej 15 to 20 minutes aside to exercise. Exercise alone will not take off those excess pounds, but it will help. Plan to include more physical activity in your daily schedule whether you are on a diet or not. If you are counting calories don’t forget to count nutritive value also, A sixteen ounce soft REAL MENU January 4-10 THURSDAY — Orange juice, beefsteak meuniere. chepse whipped potatoes, brussel sprouts,Jj pears, wheatgerm bread, rhargarine, milk, tea. coffee. ■ ' FRIDAY — Tomato juice, macaroni and cheese, harvard beets, mixed fruit cup, cookie, bread, margarine, milk, tea. coffee. drink and thirty potato chips contain as many calories as an eight ounce glass of chocolate milk and a peanut butter sandwich but there is no comparison in nutritive value. The milk and sandwich provide needed nutrients for utilization by the body whereas the soft drink and chips contain "empty calories " or no significant nutritive value. All foods contain calories so choose your calories by the nutritional company they keep. This year, plan to keep that New Year’s resolution. Be serious about shedding those extra pounds. Modify your eating habits, include exercise in your daily routine, and count your calories, and be patient. Disguise shortcomings
Well-chosen draperies can create a mood with style, texture and color. Besides serving as a focal point in h room, they can disguise shortcomings —a narrow window can be made to look wider, a short window longer. And draperies can keep a home warmer in winter and cooler in summer via insulated linings. Draperies are available or can be custom-made in various lengths from window sill to floor or in tiers. Draw draperies control light and air and provide privacy. Straight hanging draperies have a tailored look. Swept-back panels are graceful and often make windows appear wider. One-way draws are dramatic and are a solution for corner windows. Stationary sheers behind draperies lessen sunlight entry and offer protection from sun fading. Bold colors and dramatic patterns are best used in large rooms. Subdued colors and designs make small rooms appear larger. Fabric choices are endless in design, color and texture, and consideration should be given to drapery fabric and lining material for personal needs and care. Some characteristics to consider are: Is the fabric resistant to abrasion? This is important if panels touch .each Lakeland Locals Visiting their parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Maher and family, Waubee Lake, were Michael, who is stationed with the U S. Linings can protect draperies from sun fading; insulated linings provide acoustical control, help eliminate drafts and can black out or dim out the sun. One of their most important functions, especially today, is in helping to save energy. In warm climates, energy reflected by insulated linings goes back out the window. In cold weather, the linings help reflect heat energy back into the room. In this way they keep a room cooler in summer and warmer in winter, thus saving on air conditioning and fuel costs.
