Hare, Thom lead Yellow Jackets The North Webster Trojans invaded Syracuse last week and came away with a loss in an eighth grade basketball game The host Yellow Jackets resorted to biological warfare as they treated the Trojans to a lesson about plants and animals — namely Thorns and Hares. Jeff Thorn led an early Syracuse charge as he netted three baskets in the first quarter to fire the Yellow Jackets to an eight to two lead. Syracuse was able to maintain this into the last quarter as they led 24-17 after three quarters. The Trojans then rebounded to come very close 27-25. Steve Williams scored 10 points in the first three quarters to keep them close and Brian Walls fired in seven of his 12 points in the last quarter to almost tie the game. At this time Yellow Jacket Coach Galen Hershberger resorted to his next weapon. Pat Hare. Hare, who has been improving each week, fired in three straight baskets to pull the Yellow Jackets to the win 37-29. Thorn and Hare both had 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead Syracuse. Every Yellow Jacket saw action and six players were able to score. In seventh grade action Kim Zurcher proved too much for the Yellow Jackets. His demon stration of passing, dribbling, and shooting gives every indication of the treat W’arrior fans are in for in a few years. Zurcher finished the night with 11 points and his passes to Ohlwine set him up for 14 points. The Yellow Jackets next opponent will be Nappanee in a 4:30 p.m. home game, January 9. B Schopf 166, 161 Walking is the favorite exercise in America Walking is the nation's most popular form of exercise A study by the U. S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW) showed that 49 per cent of Americans 20 years old and more do at least one regular exercise, while 51 per cent do none.. Walking was the most common exercise with seven of 10 persons who exercise doing it. Among specified sports, the participation rate was highest for swimming at 24 per cent. The report, based on approximately 58,000 persons, revealed that a higher proportion of younger persons exercise regularly than older persons do. About 54 per cent of persons 2044 years old exercise, while only about 42 per cent 65 and over exercise regularly. Persons with higher family incomes were more likely to exercise than were poorer people. And almost nine out of 10 persons 65 years or over who exercised were walkers.

A survey of 2,200 children by the foundation for child development showed that 90 per cent liked their teachers and their classmates, and felt good about school. Only 10 per cent said they hated schoolwork. Another survey by the National Educational Association, however, reported that teachers are dropping out of the classrooms in record numbers.
