Oscar Hernandez 4-0 Warsaw trims Syracuse 37-20 The Warsaw' Tigers eighth grade basketball team jumped off to a 12-0 first quarter lead and maintained it throughout the game to win 37-20 this past week. The Yellow Jackets could not find the range early and committed too many turnovers to stay with their taller foe. Jeff Thorn was the only YellowJacket to be able to score consistently with eight points and five rebounds. Coach Galen Hershberger used every boy on the squad in an attempt to find someone with the poise and confidence to attack the taller Warsaw boys. In seventh grade action, Warsaw ’ was also victorious winning 31-15. The Yellow Jackets were again unable to score in the first quarter. Ken Swartz provided the only scoring punch the Yellow Jackets could find and hit five field goals for 1 flpoints. Coach Casimer Szynal used 11 boys, but no combination was able to stem the tide. The Syracuse teams return to action January 9 with a home game at 6 p.m. with Nappanee.

Ice-fishing forecast given The Indiana Department of Natural Resources announced the 1978-1979 ice fishing forecast for the Hoosier state: Flatbelly Lake located west of the county line on the Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Area, is another bluegill ice fishing hot spot worth trying. Following the lake level drawdowns and refilling, Flatbelly Lake now offers excellent bluegill and redear fishing. The Department of Natural Resources is working to develop a northern pike population in Flatbelly Lake. Also Carr Lake, an 80-acre natural lake, located six miles south of Warsaw, has an extremely large bluegill population. Many bluegill are larger than seven inches. Good access is available at the state-owned public access site located on the northwest corner of the lake. This forecast is provided as a service to fishermen to both improve the success of current ice fishermen and to encourage new ice fishermen to take up the sport. Anyone seeking additional information is to contact the division of fish and wildlife.
