Thank goodness for snakes!

Thank goodness for snakes. Those who suffer from herpetophobia — the fear of snakes — will be dubious, but the truth is that snakes are very helpful creatures, according to the current issue of Ranger Rick’s Nature Magazine. Because they eat rodents, insects and other pests, both poisonous and harmless snakes are a special friend of the farmer, says the children's monthly published by the National Wildlife Federation. All snake venoms are comprised of enzymes that attack a bitten victim’s nerves, blood or muscles. Scientists are now able to isolate some of these enzymes to fight desease. Cobroxin, an enzyme from cobra venom, is a powerful painkiller for patients suffering from arthritis, cancer or leprosy. Venom from a snake called Russell’s viper is used to treat hemophilia, a blood plasma defect that prevents normal clotting. On the other hand, says Ranger Rick, an enzyme from another viper’s venom helps dissolve blood clots than can

"Labels for Education” underway at Syracuse

For its fifth year, the Syracuse Elementary School, along with the Syracuse Parents Teacher Organization (PTO), is participating in the “Labels for Education” program, sponsored by the Campbell Soup Company. Mrs. Stanley Rensberger is directing the collection and bundling operations this year. The actual collection period started on December 4 and will end February 23. Labels eligible for this year’s collection include all Campbell Soup and bean products, all Franco-American products and V-8 vegetable juice. Only the front portion of the label is needed, which will reduce the cost of mailing the labels and will allow individuals to identify unused cans. Robert D. Hamman, principal of the school, announced again, “We are not trying to encourage anyone to buy these products, if they don’t normally use them. We are merely requesting that people who use the products save the labels for us and send them to us during the collection period. " During the past four years, the PTO and school collected 7,800, 8,000, 12,700 and 13,100 labels, respectively. As a result, the school received free a Kodak carousel slide projector, two cassette player-recorders, a portable movie projection screen, a jack box for a listening center, a portable listening center with eight head sets and two record players. This year’s goal is 15,000 labels.

“If we meet our goal,” said Hamman, "We will receive another record player, a model of a human torso and a ball inflator with gauge.” “Not only have parents of our students responded to this program, but also other friends and relatives, people in the community with no children in school and people in surrounding communities. Some businesses and factories have even collected for us, Hamman added.
