Attempt to organize area Special Olympics Committee
A few parents of the Lakeland area met last Thursday night, under direction of Mrs. Steve (Diane) Elliott, in an attempt to organize a Lakeland Special Olympics Committee, composed of parents with special children in an attempt to raise funding to help send the youth to Special Olympic events. Money making projects are being planned to help students attend different meets, and the local teachers’ association is planning a spring walk-a-thon to raise funds to send the Lakeland students to state competition in June. A large flea market and bake sale are also in the planning in the spring. Funds Needed A spokesman said S2OO is needed by mid January to send these special students to the Winter Olympics, and around $2,000 is needed by spring for Syracuse rolls over Pierceton The Syracuse Yellow Jacket eighth grade basketball team shot to a 24-12 halftime lead on its way to a 47-36 victory over Pierceton last Thursday. The Yellow Jackets enjoyed a 35-18 third quarter lead and again used every player with six boys scoring. Kevin Smith lead the first quarter charge with two fast break baskets to start the game. Jeff Thorn controlled the backboard throughout the game and his passes out to David Workman and Brian Kistler helped them for many of the 20 points they scored together. Smith led the Jackets with 15 points and held Charlie Dull to eight during the first half for a sterling all-around performance. Jon Vitaniemi added four points while playing a good offensive and defensive game. Thorn, while controlling the backboards, added some blocked shoots and steals to his credit as he scored six points. Charlie Dull led Pierceton with 26 points as he scored seven baskets in the last quarter. This Thursday, the Yellow Jackets will travel to South Whitley for a 6 p.m. game. This matchup could give a good indication as to who will win the Camelot Basketball Tourney, as both squads are highly rated. In seventh grade action Pierceton spurted from a 10-7 lead to completely control the game and win 37-13. The taller, quicker. Cubs alternated players throughout and wound up with eight players scoring. Jim Schlabach led Syracuse in scoring and rebounding and is developing into a steady player Seventh grade Coach Casimer Szynal will be looking for players to begin developing the concentration on offense and defense which will improve the teams performance.

Wakarusa defeats Yellow Jackets The Syracuse Yellow Jackets basketball teams invaded the Wakarusa Indians teepee Tuesday of last week, and wound up leaving their scalps. The host Indians took a cliffhanger in the eighth grade game 38-36. Syracuse jumped off to an early lead and managed to hold it into the fourth quarter, but once the Indians took the lead they never gave it back. Kevin Smith put on a nice shooting display hitting six of 13 shots to lead Syracuse with 12 points. Brian Kistler added 11 points and Jeff Thorn had eight. Unfortunately, the other eight Yellow Jackets could only add three points between them. Bemiller was the high Scorer for the Indians as he continually drove the right side to net 17 points. Drudge added 8 points. In the seventh grade game the Indians came out firing and never let up. Ahead 13-4 at the first quarter stop, they jumped to a 20-point lead after three quarters and then coasted. Both coaches gave every boy a chance to play which should make an enjoyable experience for all regardless of the score. Tracy Thornburg led Syracuse with six points. The Yellow Jackets next game is this Thursday at South Whitley followed by a home game next Thursday, Dec. 14, against Warsaw.
boys may later compete at the state meet. It was announced that one of the Syracuse students will be picked to attend the International Basketball Olympics as a representative of Indiana to be held in New York City. Any individual, organization or business interested in this new group, or w'ith questions, or wishing to contribute funding or assistance in any way, may contact Mrs. Elliott. Warriors lose second straight
By DOUG WALKER ELKHART — The Wawasee Warriors fell for the second time in as many nights Saturday, as they were defeated by the Memorial Chargers, 69-57. The loss brought the Warrior record to 3-2. The Chargers, who had won their two previous games, got off to a good start, and held a 13-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. Wawasee exploded midway through the second quarter, and at one point held a 30-22 lead. Elkhart Memorial came fighting back, however, and sparked by forward Garrett Skipper, they had cut the Warrior lead to 30-29 at half-time. The Warriors looked tired in the third quarter (which they probably were, coming off the previous night's exhausting loss to Concord), and Memorial took advantage of this fact. By the end of the quarter, they had the game under control with a commanding 55-40 lead. Wawasee kept pace in the final period, but it was too late, as the Chargers came away with the 69-57 win. Warrior Mark Wagoner received an elbow from Elkhart center Mike Gary late in the game that resulted in a broken nose. It is unknown if the injury Milford drops game to Nappanee After an impressive 41-29 victory over Warsaw last week, the Milford Junior High eighth grade basketball team lost to Nappanee 42-40 in a game played last night (Tuesday). Nappanee jumped out in front 17-8 at the end of the first quarter and extended the lead to 22-12 at half-time. Beginning the third quarter, the Trojans put on a press and outscored the Bulldogs 18-8 to tie them at 30-30. Nappanee then took a quick 34-30 lead, but Milford fought back to within one 39-38 with 22 seconds to go. The Trojans could not get a shot off and had to foul. Nappanee scored three more times on free throws while Milford could only manage two to make the final score 42-40. It was a good comeback. Rick Pena scored 18 points with Kevin Harney adding eight. Ross Dahlstrom scored six, Mike Patty and Eric Beer had four each.

The game was the Warriors’ first against a Northern Lakes Conference opponent. The Minutemen got off to a quick start, and held a 19-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. Turnovers plagued the Warriors in the second quarter (Wawasee lost the ball a total of 19 times in the first half), and Concord went
