Obituaries
Homer Hiner May 10, 1890 — Nov. 29,1978 Funeral services were held Saturday for Homer F. Hiner. 88, of South'Bend and formerly of North Webster. The father of Donald Hiner of North Webster, death came at 5:45 p.m. last Wednesday at Saint Joseph Hospital in South Bend and was attributed to an apparent heart attack. Bom in Wabash County on May 10,1890, a son of Joseph and Mary Hiner, he had resided in the North Webster community since 1916 until moving to South Bend about one year ago. His marriage to the former Vera E. Stoner took place in 1916, and she survives. A retired farmer and former school teacher, the deceased was a member of the North Webster United Methodist Church In addition to the wife and son, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Ray (Fay) Estes of South Bend, five grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Rev. O. Rex Lindemood officiated for the morning service and interment was in North Webster cemetery. Stella Gabbard Nov. 5.1905— Dec. 1, 1978 Mrs. Stella J. Gabbard, 73 of Leesburg, Fla., and mother of Mrs. Howard (Rita) Koenigshof of Pierceton, passed away Friday noon at Leesburg General Hospital following an extended illness. Born in London, Ky., on November 5, 1905, a son of Frank and Alice (Hedrick) Blankenship, she moved to Florida from Muncie about 12 years ago. Her marriage to Edward Gabbard took place on April 24, 1924 and he survives. She was a housewife, member of the Order of Eastern Star at Indianapolis, the Broadway Methodist Church at Indianapolis, and active in Red Cross work at Indianapolis. In addition to the husband and daughter, she is survived by two grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Alice Poeschl of Summerset, Ky., and Mrs MaryBlankenship, London, Ky. Rev. Richard Mayhugh officiated for the service held on Monday morning, and burial was in North Webster cemetery. Fred S. Pletcher Nov. 27, 1921 — Dec. 1.1978 Frederick S. Pletcher. 57. 303 W. Kercher Road. Goshen, father of Rodney Pletcher, Dewart Lake, died at 12:46 a m. Friday, Dec. 1, in the Goshen Hospital where he had been a patient for five days. He has been ill for several years with a variety of ailments. Pletcher was president of Pletcher Motors and a former Indiana state representative. He was a Nappanee native, born November 27, 1921, to M. S and Celeste (Bliele) Pletcher. He was a 1940 graduate of Nappanee High School and attended Goshen College for two years before attending Wabash College where he graduated in 1944. Pletcher Motor Company and in 1950 he moved to Goshen and purchased the Buick agency. In 1956 he ran for the Indiana General Assembly as a state representative and from 1957 to 1959 he served in the House of Representatives. In 1966 he sought the county assessor's post after working in that office as deputy for several years. Later that year he took over the managership of Riverside Motors and purchased the business in 1968. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, active m Masonic organizations including the South Bend Scottish Rite and the Goshen Shrine Club He was a past president of the Nappanee Jaycees and was state aviation chairman for the Jaycees during his active years Always supportive of Republican activities, he was an early member of the Goshen Young Republicans and was a former member of the Goshen Rotary Club On October 15,1944, he married Jean Oyler Surviving besides the Dewart Lake son are Mrs Pletcher; a daughter, Mrs. Ralph (Rita) Lockerbie, Goshen; his father, M. Frances Koontz April 12.1907 — Nov. 29,1978 Funeral services were held Friday for Frances E. Koontz, 71, of 6528 Georgetown Lane, Fort Wayne, and formerly of Syracuse. Death came at 7:35 p.m. on November 28 in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, where she had been a patient for 11 days. Born at Gaston on April 12. 1907, she was a daughter of Bert and Mary (Harrison) Powers. Her husband, Rodney Koontz, preceded her in death. The deceased was a member of the Syracuse Business and Professional Women's Club and with her husband owned and operated the Wawasee Laundromat for a number of years. Survivors include two sons. Robert P. Koontz of Fort Wayne and Richard S. Koontz, Evansville; and five grandsons. Interment was in Highland Park cemetery.
