Stress on fundamentals
Only three returning letters will be playing on the girls’ basketball team at Wawasee this year . Coach Jim Webster said, as a result, “I have a very inexperienced team.” Returning are seniors Sonya Hoover and Teresa Welborn. Also, sophomore Lonnie Black. To overcome this disability, Webster said he is stressing everything at practice. He commented, “Girls are basically weaker than boys. They have to work with basic fundamentals. The girls are lifting weights and jumping rope to improve themselves.” He is also stressing man to man defense, receiving and shooting. “We’re weak on inside positions such as center and forward. But, we’re decent on ball handling and guards. We’re pretty equal on offense and defense.” Teamwork is another area Webster is stressing. “We’re going to suffer awhile as far as winning and losing,” the

coach said, “But, by the end of the season, we should look pretty good.” Wawasee will be facing two of its toughest competitors, Warsaw and Rochester, early in the season. Concerning Warsaw, Webster said, “They lost quite a bit of girls, but they have the experience of going to the state finals.” As far as how tough Rochester is going to be, the coach said, “They’ve got everybody back. I know they’re going to be good.” Two other competitors Wawasee will face early are also in the Northern Lakes Conference, North Wood and Concord. “The conference is pretty well balanced. We should know how we are going to be con-ference-wise from the start.” Webster said he would be happy to reach 500 by the season end. Wawasee will face Warsaw there on November 20.
