Jones takes over varsity

A new head varsity basketball coach is heading up the Warriors this season as Mike Jones takes over the Wawasee reins from Jerry Lambert. Though new, Jones has set some goals for this year’s team. “My main goal is to get the boys to reach their full potentials as individuals and as a team.” He commented he is stressing individual fundamentals during practice time. “I don’t try to put pressure on the boys. If they can reach their potential the best they can, the win-loss record will take care of itself.” He has two boys back which should lend experience to the team. Senior forward Mark Lantz

Many new slots have been filled with 1977-78 junior varsity and freshmen players. Concerning the attitude towards a new coach, Jones said his team has been very receptive. “The team is very cooperative. I’m impressed with their character. I’m optimistic in that the boys are working with me very well.” Offensively, Jones said he is impressed with a few individuals. He is also impressed with the team’s ability to work together as

a unit. “They will pass to an open man. They’re showing a great degree of unselfishness.” Defense is what the team is needing work on, said Jones. “We’re not at the point I want to be at yet. The one on one skills need work. I’m spending a lot of time individually on this.” As far as how tough the competition will be, Jones said, “1 really don’t know being new. ” He said he has heard the conference is tough up here. The Warriors held a special preview night November 14. The first battle will be against Carroll November 18 at Carroll. First home game is November 21 against Fairfield.
