Christmas mailing dates given by postal authorities
Syracuse postmaster Avon Bushong has released the following Christmas mailing schedules to assure pre-holiday delivery. There will be no specific mailing dates in 1978 for domestic mail, except for Alaska and Hawaii. To assure the timely arrival of military mail at overseas destinations, all mail should be deposited on or before the following dates: Surface mail so Africa, Central and South America and Europe needs to be mailed by November 10; the Caribbean and West Indies by November 13; Iceland by November 22; Greenland by November 25; and Alaska and Hawaii by December 1. SAM mail should be mailed to: South East Asia by November 10; Africa, Australia, Central and South America by November 11; Europe and the Far East by November 21; Caribbean, West Indies and Iceland by November 22; Greenland by November 25; and Alaska by December 2. PAL mail should be mailed to the destinations of: Africa, Australia, Central and South America, and South East-Asia by November 18; Europe and the Far East by November 28; Caribbean, West Indies and Iceland by November 30; Greenland by December 1; and Alaska by December 9. Vehicle a total loss as car hits tree Minor injuries and a total loss to a 1970-model car was caused last Saturday at 9:35 a.m. when a Fort Wayne woman lost control of the auto that slid into a tree. Alma E. Arnold, 59, Fort Wayne, suffered a cut on the forehead when her car reportedly slid past the. intersection of Syracuse-Webster Rd. and hit a tree. The vehicle traveled another 48 feet seven inches before it came to a stop. County Police Lt. Richard Mikel investigated.

1 YEAR AGO, NOV. 16,1977 Approximately three inches of snow fell in the area last Friday when a heavy snowstorm hit the Midwest bringing this season’s first measureable snowfall. Dr. Margaret Mead, the worldrenowned anthropologist, visited in the Syracuse community on Saturday and Sunday. The Counting House Bank of North Webster recently filed an application with the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions for approval to open a branch bank in Syracuse. Dagny, Inc., r 4, Lake Wawasee, was granted a new Sunday sales beer license by the Kosciusko County Beverage Board. 5 YEARS AGO, NOV. 14,1973 The Syracuse Board of Zoning Appeals approved five variances and turned one down at its meeting last Thursday. The Turkey Creek township fire department will have a new semi-tractor for the water tanker, following a meeting last Thursday at Syracuse whereby bids for the unit were opened. Funeral services were held Sunday for Walter Joseph Koher, 86, of 742 S. Huntington St., Syracuse, who died last Friday at Goshen Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Penick, 11, of 618 S. Harrison St., are the parents of their first child, a daughter, Jenny Jo, born November 11 at Elkhart Hospital. Miss Janice Nichols of r 1, North Webster, and Jeffrey W. Hyndman of Syracuse were united in marriage October 20 at the Wawasee Episcopal Center, All Saints Mission, Lake Wawasee.

The Syracuse Ministerial Association met last week and elected as their president Rev. Harlan Steffen, pastor of Wawasee Lakeside Chapel. Final rites for World War I veteran, Roy Sarjent, 77, of Benton, Syracuse postmaster in 1920, were held Tuesday in Syracuse. Fletcher E. Marsh, 60, artist and art teacher, and a former resident of 430 Boston St., Syracuse, died Tuesday in the Alfran Nursing Home in Warsaw. Open house for parents of Wawasee High School students will be held tonight at Wawasee. Small group tours of the new building are planned. 20 YEARS AGO, NOV. 13,1958 At a well-attended pot-luck dinner meeting of the Masonic Lodge Monday night, discussion was devoted to ways and means of building a new temple on land in Wawasee Village donated for the purpose by Roscoe Howard and George Lamm. Edward F. Gallahue, Indianapolis insurance man, purchased the Wawasee Lake property of W. E. Long at Kale Island last month through Dick Denzel, realtor. Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Anderson, who have been at their home in Syracuse the last two months, leave Sunday for New York and will sail next week for Puerta la Cruz, Venezuela. Mr. Anderson will begin a two-year appointment with the U. S. Consulate.
