Taxes — (Continued from page 1) legislature will do at this time. A Syracuse resident, Donna Johnson, was interested in what the school’s obligation is ■> to students under title nine. "Under title nine, do we have to provide equal opportunity to boys and girls in physical education classes apart, or do they have to take these classes together?” she asked. Mrs. Johnson also wanted to know when the law would go into effect. Arnold explained the law is in effect now and the Lakeland school system is abiding by the equal opportunity standards as set out in the law. Arnold said all school physical education personnel are aware of the fact combined classes are permissable. However, boys are often involved in competitive sports. Teachers must use their own judgements. He continued by saying a lot depends on the abilities of the youngsters. Some boys and girls can’t do things as well as others and. he added, we have to keep safety in mind. The big push, he said, in title nine is opportunity. At one time the girls had two sports and the boys had seven. Title nine gives boys and girls the equal opportunity to particiapte in sports. "We’re fast approaching this, we have almost as many girls sports as we have boys sports," he concluded. Adult Education The 11 non-credited adult education classes and two credited classes currently underway at Wawasee High School were presented to the board for final approval. Board member Floyd Baker made the motion that all classes be approved and the vote was affirmative. A recent change in the accounting system used in determining the procedure and payment of services to vocational employees of the Fairfield-West Noble-Lakeland Co-op agreement, made it necessary for the board to consider this matter. Arnold pointed out that changes on the agreement effect the method of payment of the salary of Richard Wysong, director. Wysong is on the staff of the Lakeland schools, therefore 80 per cent of his salary will be paid by the Lakeland system with the other 20 per cent to be paid by Fairfield and West Noble. Arnold also said that with the exception of a cosmetology class at Fairfield and a printing class at West Noble all of the vocational classes are held in the Lakeland Community School system. Questions were raised concerning the dropout rate of students in these programs. Arnold explained the response of the programs vary. He went on to explain cosmetology students must attend classes four hours a day the first year and five hours a day the

second year. “We’ve had very little fall off the second year in this program, which tends to show a good deal of commitment from the students enrolled,’’ Arnold said. Board member John Kroh said school corporation patrons had approached him as to why a cosmetology class could not be held at Wawasee. Arnold explained these classes could only be started and held with state approval. Fairfield personnel, he continued, had worked for three years before receiving approval with the difficulty being the availability of classes at the Elkhart Career Center Arnold said no other classes would be approved in this area. Following the discussion a motion was made and passed to approve the agreement for the vocational programs. In other action, the school board approved GED test diplomas for Janet A. Shookman of Fort Wayne and Carmen Castillo of Milford. Leaves of absence were granted to Laura McKee of the North Webster Elementary School and Julie Gunden of the Milford Elementary School, both for child bearing reasons. The minutes for the meetings held October 10 and 24 and claims for the month of October were presented and approved by all board members. Extra curricular reports for the Lakeland school system and certificates of payments were also approved. Board member Philip Payne was absent from the meeting. It was noted he is undergoing tests in a Fort Wayne hospital, where he was admitted on November 6. Parts stolen from bicycle The Syracuse police department received a theft report Saturday at 1:17 p.m. involving parts stolen from a bicycle. Freddie Gomez, 507 W.
