1 YEAR AGO. NOV. 9,1977 An estimated quarter of a million dollars damage has been set for a fire at Oakwood Park, Syracuse, which completely destroyed seven cottages and heavily damaged several others last Saturday. Arson is believed to be the cause of two barn fires, causing $30,000 damage on property owned by Donald and Martha Scearce on CR 450 E, and minor damage at the Dan Beer farm on the Syracuse-Milford Rd. Members of the Syracuse Primary Mothers Club discussed their upcoming Breakfast with Santa Claus at a meeting Nov. 7 in the home of Mrs. George Vitaniemi. A son, Travis James, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Ball, 612 E. Pittsburg St., Syracuse, at 10 a.m. Nov. 1 in Goshen Hospital. Readying for the grand opening of Radio Shack in Syracuse this week end are Tom Utley, secretary of VUTronics, Inc., Bart Antonides, store manager.

Break-ins were reported to Syracuse police by Pickwick Theater manager, Tim Yeager, the Frog Annex, and the Lakeland Youth Center. 10 YEARS AGO, NOV 6.1968 Jerry Helvey, president of the Lakeland School Board, won his bid for re-election in Tuesday’s election. Turkey Creek’s six precincts joined the rest of Kosciusko County in a solid Republican vote yesterday. They gave Richard Nixon 1,440 votes to 566 for Hubert Humphrey and 162 for George Wallace. The Syracuse Camp Fire girls held their annual ceremonial and fly-up in the Junior High School gym Sunday. About 90 girls took part in the program. Emerson suffered a burned face and had his hair singed when an oil hea f ing stove puffed flame into his face Saturday. An expolsion in the coal stove in his house caused “Bub” Adam Strieby’s house south of town to be entirely destroyed by fire. His face was blistered, the hair burned from his head, and his hands were burned. Retired teachers hear about 'early schooldays'

The Kosciusko County Retired Teachers met recently in the Shrine Building for their last meeting of the year. The members and guest present numbered 97. After the dinner, Lester Davis, president, called the meeting to order and introduced Bonnie Whittenberger, who presented the evening’s program. The program covered the early schooldays and home lives of people in the speaker’s home area. She showed many samples of items and pictures. All members received copies of the new committees and their membership. President Davis discussed these with the members and asked all to cooperate with the IRTA and help increase
