Golden Aprils Club tours haunted house

Nancy Barker was hostess for the October 31 meeting of Golden April Extension Homemakers Club. Roll call response was, “A Halloween Trick. ” Members were reminded to vote. Prior to attending the meeting some of the ladies toured the JC sponsored Haunted House at the Pierceton public library. Barbee Church has bus ministry party

Barbee Community Church annual bus ministry birthday party was held from 2 till 4:30 p.m., October 28, at Barbee Community Church. Mr. and Mrs. Herb Searer and family were hosts for the 104 children and 20 adults attending the event. Searer serves as bus minister for Barbee Church. The party rooms were decorated with pink and blue crepe paper streamers, bouquets of fall flowers, and a colorful assortment of helium filled balloons. Refreshments of ice cream and birthday cake were served. The cakes were provided by members of the church and parents of the children attending the party.

‘‘Our Plans For Thanksgiving.” Ann Engle was a guest. During the business session reports were given of the fall luncheon and county Christmas Bazaar. It was announced that a Christmas party will be held the first Wednesday in December in the home of Barbara Goodpaster. A gift exchange and carry-in dinner is planned. A group discussion was held concerning the Wawasee High School drama production of “Godspell.” Other reports were given by Dixie Pryor, health and safety; Marian Breyer, citizenship; and Janet Hamman, garden remarks. Refreshments were served by the hostess and co-hostess. Dr. recouperating Dr. Leo Commiskey, Pierceton, is recouperating from hip surgery. He is in room 527 at Park View Hospital, Fort Wayne. He is reported to be doing well and would appreciate hearing from friends. Bible reading program starts A fall Bible reading program is being sponsored by the men’s group at North Webster Church of God. The program started November 6 and will end December 3. Reading material is available for the entire family. Joe Reynolds is president of the men’s group. Community service set at Pierceton Community Thanksgiving service will be held at 7 p.m., November 22, at Saint Francis Catholic Church, Pierceton. Representatives from churches in the Pierceton community area will take part in the service. Following the service a reception will be held in the church hall. Refreshments will be served. The public is welcome to attend.

New officers elected for Barbee Hoosiers New officers were elected during the November 1 meeting of Barbee Hoosier club. The new officers are: Opal Esch — president Harriett Williamson 3 — vice president Martha Kussmaul — secretary Edna Lawson — treasurer The meeting was held at Barbee Conservation club building. Roll call was answered by 16 members. Plans were made for a Christmas party to be held at a local restaurant in December. A gift exchange is planned. Mrs. Lawson is chairman for the dinner party. It was announced that Mrs. Lawson and Ruth Butler will represent the club by preparing dinner for the election board on November?. New program books were completed. A carry-in dinner was served at noon. Tables were decorated with arrangements of fall flowers highlighted by a yellow candle with the figure of a small mouse inside. A reduced price sale of useful items was enjoyed during the afternoon. Mrs. Butler was chairman of the dinner committee. She was assisted by Mrs. Lawson and Joan Kilmer. group at North Webster Church of God. The dinner was served at the church. This month’s North Webster Church of God Church Council meeting is scheduled for November 30. Rosemary Stapleton and Orpha Foster represented Barbee Community Church at a buffet luncheon held October 30 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Smith, Pierceton. There were approximately 40 nursing home volunteer workers and other personnel present for the event. North Webster Church of God Win-One Sunday school class is planning a class party to be held November 10. A member of the Gideons International will be speaking during the October 12 morning worship service at North Webster Church of God. The Missions Committee will meet November 13 at the North Webster Church of God. -NWPump short causes fire A short in the water pump caused a fire at the Helen Taylor residence, Syracuse, last Thursday morning. The pump house fire which resulted in SI,OOO damage and required 75 gallons of water, was extinguished by the Syracuse Fire Department with the help of New Paris firemen. Field Fire Syracuse firemen were called to a cornfield fire at CR 56 and 127 last Thursday at 2:24 p.m. Steve Haab was burning brush when the flames went out of control. Four hundred gallons of water were used to extinguish the blaze but no damage was reported. Trailer broken-into at Dewart Lake A trailer in Fairfield Trailer Park, Dewart Lake, Syracuse, owned by Gerald Crowl, was broken into sometime in the last 15 days, according to Kosciusko County police. Crowl reported the incident to police last Tuesday. He said that a door was pried open and the glass broken, causing $25 damage. Nothing was reported missing from the residence.

'Miss Indiana* to speak to Lions, ladies

Milford Lions are being urged to attend the Ladies’ Night meeting, to be held Monday, Nov. FFA wins fourth Four area youths representing Wawasee High School and the Indiana Future Farmers of America placed fourth at the recently concluded National Horticulture Judging Contests in Cleveland, Ohio. Raymond Hively placed fifth in the individual competition. Other team members were Ed Clayton, Judy Wall and Brian Roberts. The contests were a part of the National Junior Horticulture Association’s annual convention. Convention participants enjoyed tours to the Cleveland Garden Center, Cleveland Natural History Museum, Cleveland Art Museum, the Ohio Agriculture Research and Development Center and the Delbert Smith Greenhouses. Smiths are one of the largest growers of foilage plants in the nation. Mr. and Mrs. Randy Warren accompanied the team members. Mr. Warren is vocational agriculture instructor and FFA advisor at Wawasee High School.
