Pony Express ready to ride
The Pony Express is ready to ride at the Milford United Methodist Church. A Western breakfast and worship service Sunday, Nov. 12. will signal the start of the stewardship campaign. Rev. Everett Owens, pastor, said he expects 20 members filling the roles of trail bosses and station agents to be on hand for the breakfast briefing. Jim Brooks, general manager, says the response to requests for campaign workers has been better than usual. Above, are some workers involved in the campaign. Seated, from left to right, are: Bill Motts, station agent; Mrs. Bill Motts; Fay Hollar, trail boss; Mary Duncan, trail boss; and Della Baumgartner, publicity. In back, workers include: Don Ahrns, finance chairman; Jean Purcell, chief cook; Harold Wilson, trail boss; Marilyn Brown, trail boss; Jim Stork, trail boss; Brooks; Leon Newman, station agent; and Rev. Owens. Unique Approach Brooks says the program is using a unique approach to raising the church budget. Instead of making pledges, members will be filling in estimate of giving cards. Saddlebags will be handed out at the Sunday meeting. A relay of the saddlebags among church members will begin immediately after morning worship. Each saddlebag bears the names of 10 church families. A family fills in an estimate of giving card, seals it in an envelope and inserts it in the saddlebag pouch and hand-carries it to another family on the route. A trail boss will be responsible for making sure the saddlebag keeps moving from family to family on the route. A station agent will supervise each five trail bosses. Teamwork And Competition Rev. Owens commented the plan has received enthusiastic reception so far. “There’s a spirit of teamwork and, at the same time, competition.” He

added the teamwork is similar to that of the Pony Express riders a century ago. The competition comes in the eagerness of the trail bosses to see that his or her run is completed before another’s is finished. The pastor said, “It’s good healthy competition for a good cause.” Besides the above mentioned, also involved in the campaign are as follows: Evelyn Vandergrift, mail clerk; Arch Baumgartner, publicity; Nancy Newcomer, Sunday School coordinator; Harlan Wuthrich, trail boss; Ann Brooks, trail boss; Pat Ritter, trail boss; and Dean Cousin, station agent.

ATTEND THE CHURCH OF YOUR CHOICE

I’ve tried reading the Bible but it doesn’t make sense to me! Have you ever said that? Most of us have felt that way at one time or another. The Bible is not a book like any other book.“ The Holy Spirit is the interperter’’ Luke 24:45. Here it was the disciples of Jesus who had to have their understanding openedIn my last column I mentioned Matthew 22:29 where Jesus spoke of the need of knowing the scriptures and the power of God. “You do err not knowing the scriptures and the power of God.’’ How does one get the Holy Spirit to open his understanding? By asking, prayer. It is important to understand that Jesus Christ must be accepted as Lord and Savior for the Holy Spirit to be indwelling; I believe that God will show anyone how to be saved if they really want to know. It is important for a new or weak Christian to be around mature Christians who believe the Bible is the word of God without error as first written. The word of God is spoken of as spiritual bread; we must eat food to stay strong and we need to eat of the word daily to stay spiritually strong. Without this there is no Promised Land Living. The Bible says many things about itself to you “Continue in the things which you have learned and have been assured of, knowing of whom you have learned them; as a child you have known the holy scriptures, which are able to make you wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; that man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. 2 Timothy 3:14-17 Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 “Thy word is a lamp unto my

You cannot enter nor stay in the Promised Land without walking with God.

The Bible named after Lebanese ruin
On a slope near Beirut, Lebanon, rockets and small bombs have been exploding for months over the ruins of the ancient city of Gebal, the very soil from which the Bible got its name. In Latin, Gebal is spelled “by bios.” In English, it becomes “bible.” During the Biblical period, most writings were done on sheets or rolls of papyrus, a paper-like writing material made from a reedy plant. Most of the papyrus consumed in the first century world was manufactured in Egypt and stored in giant warehouses at Gebal, then a major Phoenician port city. As merchants around the

Mediterranean Sea imported their valuable papyrus from Gebal (Byblos), they began calling the writing material by the name of the town from which it was imported. Eventually, collections of papyrus writings came to be called “bibles” and God’s Word became “The Holy Bible." So, the most important book in the history of humankind, the Holy Bible, got its name from an ancient Lebanese city which is today at the center of tense conflict. “It usually takes more than three weeks to prepare a good impromptu speech.” Mark Twain
