“TO THE VOTERS OF ■ THE ' ■JOB 17TH DISTRICT” It is not my policy to answer political propaganda ads, but the ones written by Stan Nice, Kosciusko County Democrat Chairman regarding the Fuel adjustment clause are so misrepresented, that an answer is needed. The accusations against me and the legislature are completely false. The amended fuel adjustment clause Senate/Bill No. 535, on house roll call No. 718, April 3, 1975 is not a fuel adjustment charge. The legislature can not vote a charge on utility bills. The pledge by my opponent to eliminate the fuel adjustment charge, if elected, is absolutely false, as the legislature can not put on or take off a fuel adjustment charge on utility bills. The Indiana Public Service Commission is the rate regulator of utilities. I voted against allowing sales tax on utilities, contrary to k the Democrats’ accusation that I voted for the sales tax. As your State Representative I feel you are entitled to the true facts. Will appreciate your vote for Thames Mauzy on November 7. Thank You. Ross Cook officiated at the double ring ceremony in the presence of 25 guests. Springri planters were in front of the fireplace with two seven branch candelabra on either side of the fireplace with yellow candles, tied with corsages of butterscotch, bronze and gold daisies with yellow ribbons. The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, wore her mother's gown of satin topped with a sweetheart neckline outlined in seed pearls. The taperd sleeves came over the hands and 8 the skirt was of double net. Her veil was a cap of daisies outlined in seed pearls and a double net shoulder-length veil. She parried a bridal bouquet of butterscotch, bronze and gold daisies with yellow ribbon. The maid of honor was Nancy Pretorius, Urbana. She wore a quiana aquamarine midcalf dress with a cowl neckline. Her bouguet was a small copy of the bride’s. Best man for the bridegroom was Gary Fisher, Lake Tippecanoe. Mother of the bride, Mrs. Paul Brembeck. wore a silver grey satin frock with rhinestone buttons. The bridegroom’s mother, Mrs. John Fisher, wore a qiana light blue gown. Both mothers wore corsages of but-
terscotch, bronze and gold daisies. A light lunch was served at the bride’s home for the wedding guests. The reception was held at the Tippecanoe Country Club. A light supper was served later in the evening at the bride’s home for members of the immediate family. Mrs. Fisher is a graduate of Wawasee High School and attended Manchester College. Her husband, a farmer, is also a graduate of Wawasee High School and attended Purdue University. The couple is residing at 624 Front Street, Syracuse. Dan Richard speaks to CRC members Dan Richard, director of the Kosciusko Area Planning Commission, was guest speaker at the Columbian Reading Circle meeting, held in the home of Mrs. Robert Hurd, Milford. Mrs. Don Ahrns, introduced Richard who gave a talk concerning various duties of the commission and their branch agencies. A question and answer period followed the presentation. A short business meeting was conducted before the guest speaker’s presentation. The next meeting will be in the home of Mrs. Edith Baumgartner. Gamma Sigmas plan projects The Gamma Sigma Chapter of ESA has begun the year with many different projects and activities. The October meeting was held in the home of Judi Storey. The group heard a very interesting and helpful talk on the law and how it applies to them, given by Steve Hearn, a local barrister. Marguerite Hoerr was also on hand to meet the group and answer questions about her school board aspirations. In September, the group met in the home of Carol King, where they heard a presentation by Mr. Faust, a representative of Camp Riley in Martinsville: since ESA has worked to build an arts and crafts building there and is now involved in furnishing their new health facility, the informative, talk and movie presentation were invaluable. Gamma Sigma is involving itself in many local activities this year to raise money projects. To refurbish an account from which Syracuse students may draw for their health needs, the sorority held another Haunted House at the Syracuse PTO Halloween Carnival on October 30. They will also be selling calico and macrame wreathes by order and on the spot at the North Webster Christmas Bazaar on December 2 at the junior high school. Women in the Hall of Fame topic for Wednesday Club
Women in the Hall of Fame was the topic of discussion when the Wednesday Afternoon Club at Syracuse met last Wednesday in the home of Mrs. Joel Robbins. The Hall of Fame is a colonnade and substructure which adjoins the Gould Memorial Library of New York University. It was built in 1900 to contain memorials of great Americans. Every five years a group of prominent citizens meets to review names submitted by the public for candidates to the Hall of Fame. Ten women have been
Calling Colleen BY COLLEEN DUDGEON Sister’s Boyfriend Should Not Be Encouraged Too Much
My Sister’s boyfriend is supposedly a very close friend of mine. The problem is we care for each other more than ordinary
friends. He has told me he likes me and cares for me more than my sister. This has been going on for weeks. When he calls, he asks for
me, not my sister. Lately, she has been acting suspicious. What should I do? Confused
From Finland with love — exchange student Arto Nummila
By ANN BRICE Wawasee High School is feeling a touch of European influence this year in the person of Arto Nummila. Arto is an exchange student from Finland currently living with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Haffner, r 4 Syracuse. His home is in Espoo, a town near the Finnish capital of Helsinki. Arto’s father is the production president for Finland’s govern-ment-owned oil company, and he has three older brothers, including a set of twins. His visit here began August 18, when he arrived in Detroit for a three-day seminar on the exchange program. He plans to stay until sometime next June or July. Although Arto* had not been to the United States before, he has traveled in Sweden and France, and he has several friends who have been to America. This gave him a good idea of what to expect. Arto was also somewhat prepared because of the importation of American-made products into Finland., An example is American automobiles, which are more expensive there than European cars. American music and some television shows, like “Happy Days” and “All in the Family” are popular, and nearly all the movies seen there are made in the United States. While Arto misses his friends and his family, he does like the United States very much. When asked whether Americans were different from the people he was used to, he replied that Americans seem happier and are quicker to offer help and assistance. He also said that Americans spend more money. “In Finland, people think more before they spend their money.” Finland, like the United States, suffers from a high inflation rate, but taxes there are much higher.

Members of the Martha, Lois and Ruth Circles of Calvary United Methodist Church at Syracuse held their monthly meetings last Wednesday and Thursday at the church. Martha Circle Hostesses for the Martha Circle w,ere Pearl Hazenfield and Barbara Roe. Honored guests at their breakfast meeting were the new church pastor, Rev. Paul Steele, and his wife, Diana. Mrs. Carlie Steele was in charge of the program and read excerpts from a book entitled “Prayers for Later Years,” author unknown. Mrs. Opal Nolan, leader, presided for the business portion of the afternoon. The following persons were reelected to serve for the ensuing 1979 year:
elected in the last 75 years. They are Mary Lyon, Emma Willard, Maria Mitchell, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Charlotte Cushman, Alice Freeman Palmer, Frances E. Willard, Susan B. Anthony, Jane Adams and Lillian B. Wald. Mrs. Stan Emerick, Mrs. Eloise Frevert and Mrs. Dean Pittman gave biographies and reviews of these ten women. Refreshments were served by the hostess at the close of the afternoon. The next meeting will be in the home of Mrs. DeFord Hite on November 8.
Dear Confused: You shouldn’t have become involved with your sister’s boyfriend, for starters. Now that you are, it’s going to be tough to handle. First, decide how much your sister cares for this guy. Then, reevaluate how much he means to you. If you hold on to’ your feelings for him, you risk losing your sister’s affection. This may be only temporary, but could bring unwanted misery. The guy is playing both sides of the fence and that spells trouble. It you would like Colleen's comments on your particular situation or problem, write COLLEEN, Box 639, Frankfort, Ky. 40602.)
Student Activities Arto is a member of the senior class at Wawasee and is taking classes in English, U.S. government, physical education, woods and U.S. history. High school in Finland is quite different from what we are accustomed to. It is more like American college and university systems, where students are not required to spend the entire day in classes, and different classes are held each day. Arto’s school in Finland included about 1200 students, roughly the same size as Wawasee. Arto was a member of the tennis team at Wawasee and is now involved in swimming. Both sports are popular in Finland, along with "Hoosier Hysteria,” soccer, ice hockey, track, snow skiing and golf. Finnish students are required to learn English in school, and Arto speaks our language very well. The language of Finland is rather unique, Arto said. While the other Scandanavian countries — Denmark, Norway and Sweden — speak basically the same language and can understand one another, the Finnish language is totally unrelated. The only European language similar to it is Hungarian. "But it is different. I cannot understand it.” Car enthusiasts will know Finland as the home country of the Saab manufacturers, which is a major industry. Others include paper, ice-breakers, and fishing. Finland And Russia To the east and south, Finland’s neighbor is the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The Gulf of Finland separates the two countries on the south, but they share a long border on Finland’s east which is carefully guarded. “Finnish people may go there, but Russian people may not go to Finland.” Arto added that few Finns travel in the Soviet Union, although Leningrad is only about

As for trade between the two countries, Arto said: "In my opinion, we have too much trade with Russia.” The exchange program will not count for credit in Finland, so Arto will have two more years of school when he returns. “It makes me a little sad because people here knownothing about Finland,” Arto reflected. “Everyone says, 'Where is Finland?’ People in Finland know a lot about the United States. But I understand, because your country is so big. You have to worry about your own country.” While we’re worrying, one of the best ways to learn something about Finland is to talk with Arto Nummila.
