LOOKS CAREFULLY ON — This referee is keeping a close eye on the ball as the Wawasee Warriors tackle the Rockies of Plymouth. The homecoming game was played last Friday night at Wawasee. Both teams fought hard in cold, misty weather, but the Rockies bested the Warriors with a 27 to 7 decision. Warriors denied homecoming victory, Plymouth wins 27-7

By J ER I SEELY One of only a few bright spots in the Wawasee High School homecoming game last Friday night was the fact the Warriors were on top for a short time by a 7-6 score. Plymouth took the victory 27-7. Plymouth also took the opening kick and turned it into six points. Scott Barrix ran the ball out to the 18-yard-line and the Rockies began to move it toward the goal line as Chris Pinkerton, a six foot senior, proved he was out to defeat Wawasee, homecoming and all. He went in on a two-yard-run. The conversion failed but Plymouth was to have a short 6-0 lead. It was homecoming and the Warriors were not to be outdone as they received the kick at 5:42. Phil Beer returned the ball, in a good run, to the 39-yard line. A fumble on the next play was recovered by the Warriors but they took at two-yard loss. Then bad things began to happen as quarterback Andy Brown was caught by several Rockies with little gain made on the play and an incomplete pass to Dave Johnson gave the Warriors a fourth and 11 situation. Dave Stoffel punted the ball. Bad things happened to Plymouth too as the ball was fumbled on the return. It was recovered but little gain was made. A short time later Doug Mock intercepted a pass and it was Wawasee's ball. Tad Tinkey got a first down for the Warriors and then carried for an additional three yards as the quarter ended. Ray Gerber made the first carry of the second quarter then Tinkey made a long run, being stopped on the 19-yard-line. Gerber carried. Brown moved forward on a keeper. Gerber carried again. Measurement. First down, Gerber then went around the left end from the four-yard-line for the touchdown. Dan Andrew’s kick was good. The score: 7-6 with Wawasee on top. Plymouth’s hopes for a quick come back touchdown werefoiled f when a holding penalty nulified a touchdown by Doug Mac Lain and the team received a 15-yard penalty. It was third and 24 yards to go. A long pass was complete to Pinkerton on the next play and the first down was recorded. The Warrior defense then showed it can be strong as Doug Mock knocked down a pass. The Rockies were to get the breaks as back to back incomplete passes gave them a three and six and four and six with a penalty being called against Wawsaee after the

POWDER PUFF FUN—These girls seemed to be having a bit of fun while playing in the powder puff football game last Thursday night. second incomplete pass. It gave them a first down and a short time later Pinkerton went across the line on a three-yard run. The kick failed. Score: 12-7. Neither team scored during the remainder of the half. Wawasee got a break with 2:08 remaining on the clock. It was Plymouth’s ball and a pass was complete to Doug Emmons near the end zone. The ball was fumbled and went out of bounds. However, the ball rolled into the end zone before going out of bounds and referees ruled a touchback. It was Wawasee’s ball on the 20-yard line. The Warriors failed to move the ball, however, and Stoffel was. forced to punt with 48 seconds remaining on the clock. Johnson took the kick to open, the second half. Tinkey was hit behind the line on the first play, then made a long run which was called back and reported by some to have changed the complection of the game. A short time later Wawasee was forced to punt. A fumble, however, gave the ball back to the Warriors a short time later. Wawasee made little gain and a short punt gave Plymouth the ball. Neither team scored during the third stanza. Brown was shaken up during the quarter and Todd Hardy got his chance to move the Warriors, gaining two yards on a keeper. Brown returned after two

plays. Midway through the fourth stanza Plymouth began to move the ball closer to the goal line via long passes. Soon the ball was on the one-yard line. It moved closer on the next play but the Warrior defense was on the job and the Rockies did not make it. With a third and one situation the Rockies were not to be denied. Mark Jeffirs went over for the score. The conversion was good. The score: 20-7. Johnson took the kick on the two and returned it to the 26-yard line. The Warriors were unable to move the ball and soon found themselves with a four and 17. A punt gave the Rockies the ball and soon they repoi t ed another first down, then another and a long run by Greg Payne put the ball on the nine-yard line. Payne carried the ball over the line a short time later. The kick was good. The score: 27-7. Wawasee made a total of 108 yards rushing and eight yards passing while Plymouth made 246 yards rushing and 155 by passing. The Warriors managed only six first downs during the evening while Plymouth had 23. Brown attempted eight passes, completing one and having one intercepted. Plymouth attempted 10 passes, completing four and having one intercepted. Both teams lost one fumble.

Wawasee runs towards sectional

By LESLIE WHITMAN The Wawasee High School cross country team will journey to Manchester this Saturday to compete in sectional play-offs against 23 other teams. Coach Jerry Minton said his team should finish in the top half. “The sectional is what we point to each year as far as improvement. The team has shown some improvement this year. They have improved their times,” he commented. Overall, Wawasee failed to score high this season. The main reason for this, said Minton, was the young players on the team. “We’ve got one senior running, the rest are underclassmen, which makes us a little young compared to the other teams in the conference. A lot of the conference this year is senior dominated. This is probably the main thing which held us back recordwise.” Consistency Coach Minton said his team did show consistency, however, especially in the number one and two-man spots. He said his

Plymouth is undefeated in the conference while Warsaw beat the 13th top team in the state.

Next Tuesday, Oct. 17. the team will be competing in a sophomore-freshman relay at East* Noble. Minton said there will be 25-30 teams at the relay. This will give Wawasee’s team a chance to compete against teams having the same age range. Even though the team has been running low recordwise this season, Minton said it is not because his runners haven’t worked hard. Practice is held

strong to win the third game by a score of 15-7. Patti Zimmerman led the scoring with 17 successful serves. Sylvia Morris led the team with passes, followed by Rosalie Rouch. Players of the week are Lana Beer and Patti Zimmerman. The girls worked together real well and showed a lot of improvement. The next game is Wednesday, Oct. 18, at North Webster.

every afternoon after school and runners are urged to practice on week ends. The team runs about 5-6 miles each day during the week and 6-8 miles on week ends. Kam Boyer, junior, Wawasee’s top runner, also showed he was serious about winning by running 1,250 miles last summer. Number two man on the Wawasee team is Brian Rosbrugh, sophomore. Looks Real Good As far as next year, coach Minton feels he should have a top notch team. “It looks real good if everyone runs this summer like they’re to. We are going to end up better in the conference with all the seniors graduating at other schools.” He said his runners should run at least 500 miles next summer if they are going to be competitive. Besides Boyer and Rosbrugh, also running for Wawasee are: Larry Chase, sophomore; Kevin Walker, sophomore; Buddy Bice, junior; Brad Brown, senior; Scott Brown, sophomore; Alan Sherman, sophomore; Gary Gerenscer. freshman; Sean Beavers, freshman; Chad Hunter, sophomore; and Richard Rhoades, junior.
