Miss Lola Buhrt, chief operator of the Syracuse branch of United Telephone Co., was guest speaker at the Oct. 6 meeting of the Intermediate Mothers Club in the Syracuse Lake home of Mrs. Harold Kline. 45 YEARS AGO. OCT. 12, 1933 Mrs. Lilly Hoopingarner received a cut forehead, a black eye and wrenched arm and hand in an automobile accident west of Nappanee on Rd. 6 Sunday. Rehearsals of the senior class play, a three-act comedy, “Sonny -Jane”,have begun. Frost was reported last week and Sunday there was snow in the vicinity of Syracuse, according to Syracuse residents who went to Goshen and Ligonier. Snow at the eastern end of Lake Wawasee was also reported. The fire whistle sounded at 7 o’clock in the morning, about the only noticeable result of the NRA in Syracuse. The Ladies of the Round Table met with Mrs. Everett O. Dunn at her home on Syracuse Lake Monday evening. A queen termite has been known to lay eggs for 50 years!

Land in county has been soil mapped
Approximately 59 per cent of the total land area in Kosciusko County has been soil mapped as of September 30. Larry Staley, SCS soil scientist at Warsaw, has mapped a total of 203,305 acres in Kosciusko County. Kosciusko County has a total of 344,320 acres. Os the total 17 townships, seven of these have been completely soil mapped. These include Scott, Jefferson, Van Buren, Turkey Creek, Tippecanoe, Plain and Wayne. Lake, Etna, and possibly Prairie will be completed in the spring of 1979, according to Staley. Mapping emphasis this year has been on matching adjacent counties which are nearing completion of their soil surveys, and also on special town projects for EPA, and consulting engineers. EPA projects completed this year included Mentone and Etna Green. Silver Tapes, wallet taken from car in Goshen Stereo tapes valued at S2OO and a wallet containing sl2 and credit cards were reported taken from the unlocked automobile of Randy A. Wheeler, r 2 Syracuse. Wheeler told police that, the items were taken while his vehicle was parked at the Richmond Wholesale parking lot, Goshen. Wheeler works at a warehouse across the street.

Soils information is a beneficial tool that is of primary interest to plan commissions, engineers, sanitarians, developers, farmers and landowners. During the last year, numerous reports have been written for the area plan commission and' individuals. These reports show the soils that occur on a particular tract and limitations of the soils for land uses.
