Unbelievable season for Wawasee golfers

By LESLIE WHITMAN Even though the girls’ golf team at Wawasee High School only placed fourth in sectional competition yesterday (Tuesday) at Fort Wayne, coach Mavis Vanderveer said the team has had an “unbelievable year.” Webster has S-Trecord The North Webster Trojans boosted their win record to 3 and 1 by defeating the South Whitley Bulldogs last week by a score of 44-0. The victory was a team effort as Steve Williams, Joel Bales, Mark Zimmerman and Dave Roberts gained yardage and scored for the Trojans. Doug Stump led the Trojan defensive lineup. Williams started the action by returning the opening kickoff 79 yards for the first score. Williams’ play for the evening totaled 36 yards gained. He carried the ball five times and scored eight extra points. Eighty-six yards and three touchdowns were added to the Trojans’ game by the offensive play by Joel Bales. Bales carried the ball six times during the game. Mark Zimmerman and Dave Roberts combined to pick up 82 yards and two touchdowns for the winning Trojans. The Trojan defense was too tough for the Bulldogs as Doug Stump had five solo tackles and five assists leaving the Bulldogs scoreless for the evening. The North Webster Trojans will see action again on Thursday, Oct. 5, when they meet the undefeated Milford Trojans at Wawasee field. The game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Wawasee’s only score in the second half was a field goal by Andrews. The 23-yard boot was Andrew’s first field goal of the season. It ccame with 2:21 remaining in the third quarter. The play was set up as Tinkey broke no less than five tackles in a 47-yard pass play to move the ball down field. The score after the field goal: 25-0. The Indians, however, were not to be counted out as they broke through the Warrior defense with 2:25 remaining. Gary Barnett caught a 19-yard-pass from Rob Oyler to put the Indians on the board. The kick by Dennis Cox was good. The score: 25-7. Wawasee will host Plymouth Friday night in the traditional homecoming meet. Plymouth, without the services of Pete

Wawasee finished its season undefeated with a 10-0 record. Mrs. Vanderveer commented, “These kids are probably the most cooperative girls I’ve ever had. They deserve recognition.” Probably the main reason Wawasee finished so high was the team’s consistency. “The girls were pretty serious about their golf. They all are really interested in the game. They all have improved their games.” Most of her starting five played in the low 40’s to low 50’s. Practice took up two days a week with a meet once a week. Coach Vanderveer said more public recognition should be given to the sport. “I don’t think they realize the time these girls putin.” Starting Five Starting for the Wawasee team were Deb Dieterly, senior, position one; Shelly Harting, senior, position two; Amy Reed, sophomore, position three; Carla Darr, junior, position four; and Alice Steffan, junior, position five. Her junior varsity team also played well, commented the coach. They, too, finished with an undefeated season. Playing on the JV team were: Nancy Norman, freshman; Charlotte Tatman, senior; Susan Naab, sophomore; Carol Phillabaum, junior; and Laura Jones, freshman. The three toughest teams Wawasee faced this season, said the coach, were Carroll, Warsaw and Goshen. The team also played Columbia City, North Wood, Huntington North, Tippecanoe Valley, Manchester and East Noble. Mrs. Vanderveer hopes for an even better team next year. “We’ve got a lot of girls coming up.
