teams are Rosalie Rouch, Sylvia Morris, Belinda Burke, Sandy Hernandez, Patti Zimmerman, Ronda Traver, Trisha Mullins, Tammy Jessop. Angie Troup, Dawn Baker, Dolores Arriola and Martha Cruz. Homer Miller 3rd at Elkhart Homer Miller, an avid runner from Milford, placed third in the Saint Joe Valley Stampede, Saturday, Sept. 23, in Elkhart. The stampede was a 9.3 mile race and one of three running events Miller participated in, in the last couple of weeks. The following day he traveled to Chicago, 111., for the 26-mile, 385-yard, Mayor Daley Marathon. Over 10,200 runners participated in the Chicago event. Miller’s time for the later race was three hours and 28 minutes. Time for the 9.3 stampede was 51.01 minutes. In the Lincoln 10,000 on September 17 at Fort Wayne, an estimated 1,200 runners participated. This event totaled 6.2 miles. Miller placed 26th with a time of 35.24 miles. Miller has been training since March and has ran over 700 miles, putting in at least 25 miles a week. Miller stated that two weeks before the marathon he ran 65 miles one week and 30 miles the next. Since March he has participated in over 15 races. Ron Baumgartner, also of Milford, ran in the Lincoln 10,000 and the Mayor Daley Marathon. At Fort Wayne Baumgartner placed 171st with a time of 42.54. His time for the marathon was five hours and 23 minutes.
the number six slot for the singles. Pat a versatile player who has a natural ability and an enthusiastic attitude is in her second year at Manchester majoring in computer sciencb and math. Both of the young women are 1977 graduates of Wawasee High School. Continues to Win The team continued its winning season on Saturday, Sept. 23, by defeating Marion by a score of 54. One of the team’s secret weapons is two-year undefeated ' player Pat McQuillian, who won her singles matches 6-3, 6-0 and who made her debut as a doubles contestant with teammate Ramona Seese and won 6-0,6-0. Since no woman player from any college has been able to win a game, much less a match, from Miss McQuillian in two continuous seasons, it is Coach Judy Silvers’ strategy to keep her star on the courts as much as possible. As such, Miss McQuillian will finish this season playing both singles and doubles matches against opposing colleges. “I take each game as it comes, and I don’t worry about maintaining a winning streak,” says Pat, a math and computer science major at Manchester. “The object is to concentrate upon the game at hand, to work hard and always give my best effort.” Pat took up tennis as a hobby in 1975 and won a spot as a doubles player on the girls’ team at Wawasee High. Her progress was steady and a year later she won a singles division competition at the Elkhart Central Invitational. The year before her 1977 graduation she was one of the top two girls singles players at Wawasee. “I joined the Manchester team as soon as I arrived on campus,” recalled Pat, “but only intended to get myself loosened up by playing some exhibition games. However, the team hit a losing streak right at the beginning of last season. I was asked to compete in singles matches the last four meets and I beat Huntington, Marion, St. Joseph’s and lU-Purdue.” This year Pat has continued her string of victories by winning against Anderson, Huntington, Goshen and Marion. As a team the Manchester women have lost just once this season, a 5-4 squeaker against Anderson College. GET THAT BALL — That’s what these players seem to be saying as they scrambled for the ball. The Wawasee Warriors have yet to find a winning streak, as the Lions from Bremen smashed them 38-0.
Lions maul Warriors
By J ER ISEELY The Wawasee Warriors couldn’t seem to get it together Friday night and as a result were mauled 37-0 by the visiting Bremen Lions. Wawasee fumbled the ball three times and each time it became Bremen’s ball. Bremen players also made five interceptions during the game. Wawasee took the field and kicked to the visiting Lions and things looked good as Bremen had an incomplete pass, quarterback Jay Leeper was caught behind the lines and the Warriors held them to a fourth and eight, forcing a punt. Dan Andrews took the ball on the six-yard-line and returned it to the 28. Sophomore Tad Tinkey got a first down, one of only 12 the Warriors would receive during the game while the Lions would pick up 21 first downs in their many marches to the goal. Bremen’s beefier line held the advancing Warriors to a third and four and forced a Warrior punt on the next series of downs. However, on the first play Bremen fumbled and Scott Rensberger made the recovery for the Warriors. It was first down for Wawasee with the ball on the 25-yard-line. Quarterback Andy Brown thew the ball to Dave Johnson at the 15 and Wawasee had another first down. The Warriors were on their way to a score. No. A fumble on the next play was recovered by Bremen’s Kent Adams. Bremen failed to gain a first down and was forced to punt to Wawasee. On second and seven Brown was caught behind the lines and it was soon fourth down and 15 yards to go. The punt gave ' the ball to the Lions and set up the first touchdown of the game. The Lions began to march downfield in a series of impressive first downs. All too soon, the ball was on the five-yard-line and Robin Hundt, a 180-pound junior, was over on a five-yard-run. The point after was good and Bremen was on the scoreboard 70. The kick was taken by Phil Beer on the 15 and run out to the 29. On the next play Kent Adams intercepted a Brown pass and Bremen took over. The Lions started another impressive march toward the goal, this time their plans were foiled at the one-yard-line as Mike Clark recovered a fumble and Wawasee took over. This too proved a pitfail for the Warriors. Following an incomplete pass the ball was given to Ray Gerber who was tackled in the end zone for a safety. Score: 9-0. Wawasee was then forced to punt to Bremen and the Lions took advantage of the possession as they worked the ball toward the goal once again. Leeper went in for the score. The point after failed and Bremen was out front 15-0. Johnson took the ball on the four and fought his way out to the 38-yard-line. A fumble on the next play was recovered by Scott
Muncy and Bremen took over all too soon. Possession didn't last long and the Lions found themselves in a fourth and 24. The punt went into the end zone and the ball was brought out to the 20. Three plays later Bremen recovered another Warrior fumble. Bremen was soon caught in a four and 23 as the defense did its job. The punt went into the end zone and Wawasee again took possession on the 20-yard-line. Warrior possession was short lived as Brown and Company found themselves short of the first down. The ball was punted to Bremen with 33 seconds remaining in the half. The Lions sharpened their teeth during the half-time break and came out looking for the Warriors. They kicked to Wawasee at the start of the third quarter and the Warriors moVed the ball down field 10 yards/ in three plays for a first dowry On the next series of plays Bremen got tough and Wawasee \was forced to punt on a fourth doW_ and 10 situation. Bremen marched down field once again in a series of first downs. Again it was Leeper who crossed the line for the score. The point after was good and the scoreboard showed 22-0. Johnson brought the kick out to the 30. An incomplete pass was almost intercepted by Andy Swain who did intercept the next pass and return it to the 35. Bremen took advantage of possession as Leeper made a 59- . yard-run into the end zone for the touchdown. Back-to-back defensive encroachment penalties against the Warriors put Bremen in good field position and the conversion, a run by Swain, was good for an additional two points. The Warriors had the ball and it seemed they might get on the scoreboard at long last. A pass from Brown to Andrews was good for a first down. Brown made another first down on a keeper as he got across mid-field. A pass to Dave Stoffel and another keeper by Brown was good for a third

first down. The Warriors were on the move. Then, with the ball on the 33-yard-line of the Lions, Brown threw a long pass and it was intercepted by Adams on the six-yard-line. Bremen was in possession at the end of the quarter. Not too long after the start of the final quarter Johnson intercepted the ball for the Warriors and the fans were on their feet. Stoffel caught a pass from Brown a few plays later and the Warriors had a first down. The ball was on the 20-yard-line. An incomplete pass and Brown being caught behind the line and Warrior hopes began to fade. However, a pass to Clark on a fourth down and five play brought a first down and hopes returned. The ball was on the five-yard-line. John DeClark intercepted a pass at the goal line and ran it back to 17 before being stopped. A short time later Curt Main went in from the five for the final touchdown of the game. Adams’ kick was good. The score was 370. A total of 3:34 remained on the clock. Warrior possession on the kick was again short-lived as Adams intercepted the ball and ran it back to the one-yard-line before being sent out of bounds by Stoffel. A penalty on the play took the ball back to the 49-yard-line but the Lions remained in possession. The Warriors did not get the ball back until the final seconds of the game and time ran out before they could score. The Warrior’s downfall can been seen in the statistics. Wawasee was credited with 83 yards rushing and 92 yards passing as Bremen chalked up 302 yards rushing and 165 yards passing. Brown attempted 25 passes with nine being complete while Bremen attempted 20 passes with 10 being complete. Wawasee made a total of 57 offensive plays while Bremen made 78. This Friday they will travel to Mississinewa and on October 6 they will host Plymouth on their home field for homecoming.
