GRANDSON OF MILFORD COUPLE HAS SURGERY Terry Cotton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Cotton of Pierceton and a student at Whitko High School, underwent emergency surgery last week end in the Bluffton Clinic. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Haney of r 2 Milford. Cotton and other Whitko High School band members were enroute to Bluffton to march in the Bluffton Street Fair parade when he became ill. He is expected to be released from the hospital sometime this week. Births EARLE, Stephanie Jean Mr. and Mrs. Steven Earle, 18857 US 6 New Paris, are the parents of their first daughter, Stephanie Jean, born Saturday, Sept. 23, at 1:39 p.m. in the Goshen Hospital. The baby weighed 10 pounds, 11 ounces at birth and was 22 inches long. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Earl Eppert of Kale Island, Lake Wawasee, and Leonard Eppert of Syracuse. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Cannon of Syracuse. Laverne King of Kendallville and Howard Johnson of Albion are the maternal greatgrandparents and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hostetler of Syracuse and Marguerite Cannon of Bremen are the paternal greatgrandparents. Grace Hochstetler Sept. 9,1978 — Sept. 20,1978 Grace Hochstetler, 12-day-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Hochstetler, r 2 Milford, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, at 10 p.m. in the Children’s Memorial Hospital, at Chicago. She was born September 9, in the Bremen Community Hospital. Surviving besides the parents are three brothers, Stephen, Devon and Wayne, all at home; four sisters, Jane, Kathryn, Alma and Becky, also at home; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Levi R. Hochstetler; Nappanee and Mr. and Mrs. Dan M. Miller, Shipshewana; and a greatgrandmother, Mrs. Fannie Stoltzfus, Ronks, Pa. Funeral services were held in the home of Melvin Miller, southeast of Nappanee. Bishop Freeman Kuhns, Melvin Miller and Melvin Schmucker, all of the Old Order Amish Church, officiated. Burial was in the Graber cemetery, Nappanee. WrightYoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, was in charge of arrangements. Harold Ryan Burial of Harold Leo Ryan, 62, of Logansport, brother of Harry Ryan of North Webster, was made September 13 in Logansport. He died September 11 in his home after a two-year illness. A native of Pierceton, he was born March 29, 1915, to John B. and Alice (Cotton) Ryan. Surviving are the widow, Helen; the brother, Harry Ryan; two daughters, Mrs. Jim Stallion of Valparaiso and Mrs. Russell Anson of Hammond; several stepchildren, and six grandchildren. Mrs. George Flinn Aug. 30,1889 —Sept. 24,1978 Mrs. George Hugh (Anne) Flinn, 89, r 1 Leesburg, died Sunday, Sept. 24, in the Kosciusko , Community Hospital at 10:30 p.m. She had been failing in health for several years. Mrs. Flinn was born at Everett, Pa., to Phillip and Mollie (Parker) Johnson, on August 30, 1889. She has been a residence of the Leesburg-Warsaw area since moving from Marion in 1936. Her husband preceded her in death in 1957. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Warsaw. Survivors include three sons, William Flinn, Warsaw, Phillip Flinn, Pierceton and W. Dennis Flinn, Atlanta, Ga.; and six grandchildren. Services were held at 9 a.m.

GARBER, Jill Elaine and Joni Marie Twin daughters, Jill Elaine and Joni Marie, were born at 12:52 a.m. and 1:04 a.m., respectively, on Tuesday, Sept. 19, in Goshen Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Wayne L. Garber, r 2 Syracuse. Mrs. Garber is the former i Jeanine Karst. Jill Elaine weighed in at five pounds, nine ounces, and was 18% inches long at birth. Joni Marie weighed eight pounds, four and onequarter ounces, and was 19% inches long. The Garbers have another daughter, Julie, aged six. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Bill Karst, r 1 Cromwell, and paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Morris Garber of Ligonier. Mrs. Virginia Paul, who resides in the Methodist Home at Warren, and Mrs Julius Karst of Huntington are the maternal great-grandparents. Yoder April 23,1905 — Sept. 26,1978 Jesse Glen Yoder, 73, r 3, Syracuse, died at 4 a.m. Tuesday in his home of an apparent heart attack. Born in Turkey Creek Township April 23, 1905, to Greeley Yoder and Florence Westlake Yoder, he had lived in this area all his life. He was a farmer and had never married. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Florence Yoder of the same address; and a sister, Mrs. Charles (Eva) Godshalk, r 5 Syracuse. Friends may call after 3 p.m. today (Wednesday) in the Harris Funeral Home where funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Rev. Chester Reed will officiate. Burial will be in the North Webster cemetery. William Sloan June 17,1915 — Sept. 24,1978 Private funeral services were held at the Titus Funeral Home in Warsaw for William F. Sloan, 63, r 1 Leesburg, father of Mrs. Richard (Jean) Phillips of Syracuse. Mr. Sloan died at 10:30 a.m. Sunday in Kosciusko Community Hospital after being in failing health for six years. He was born June 17, 1915, in Goshen to John and Nellie Sloan. On January 7, 1937, he married Evelyn Clark, who survives. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren in Leesburg. A farmer, he was also a substitute mail carrier. Surviving in addition to the widow are a son, Morgan Sloan of Johannesburg, Calif.; the= daughter, Mrs. Phillips of Syracuse; six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Gerald Harter Aug. 12,1912—Sept. 25,1978 Gerald A. Harter, 66, of r 1 Pierceton, died at 7:10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25, in the Whitley County Hospital, Columbia City, after an extended illness. He was born in Portland, August, 12, 1912, to William R. and Anna S. Sherman Harter, and had lived in Pierceton for 30 years, coming from Oswego. On March 20, 1936 he married Viola Anderson, who survives. He retired from the Weatherhead Co. in Syracuse in 1975. A veteran of World War 11, he was a member of the North

' She had been ill for the past year and a half. She was born in Marshall County on October 19, 1912, to Adam and Edna (Huffer) Secrist. She was married to Talman Gerald DeLaughter at Warsaw on October 19,1932. Hesurvies. Mrs. DeLaughter was retired from the Heckman Bindery, North Manchester, where she had been an employee for 10 years. She was a member of the United Church of Christ, Collamer, the World War II Mothers of Kosciusko County, Women of the Moose, North Manchester, Dorcas Society and the Jackson Junior Homemakers Club. She had resided in the Sidney area all her life. Also surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Darwin, North Manchester, Talman G. DeLaughter, Jr.„. Cedar Rapids, Iowa; five daughters, Mrs. Harold (Barbara) Slater, r 2 Claypool, Mrs. John (Carolyn) Maroney, New Haven, Janice Gerardot, r 2 Claypool, Mrs. Richard (Darlene) Maroney, Monroeville, and Mrs. Joe (Connie) Gottschalk, South Whitley; two brothers, Max Secrist, Columbia City and Donald Secrist, South Bend; 24 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Crewmen treated the boy for a laceration on the back of his head and advised the parents to take him to Goshen Hospital for stitches. Mike Kissinger, 17, r 1 Warsaw, was injured at 2:59 p.m. Saturday when he tripped and fell on the blacktop while running on the Wawasee High School track. He
died Thursday, Sept. 21, in the Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. Mr. Kutsch was a retired passenger conductor for the Pennsylvania Railroad. Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Butler, Fort Wayne and Betty Lou Kline. She has lived in Florida for the past 15 years. She was a member of the Bellevue United Methodist Church. Mrs. Sensibaugh was born near Bourbon on May 3, 1908. was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital in the Syracuse ambulance with a fracture of his right wrist. Syracuse EMS were called at 6:49 p.m. Monday to r 5 box 98 Syracuse, where Marcia Taylor, 12, was injured when an aerosol can thrown into a fire blew up in her face. She was taken to Goshen Hospital in the Syracuse ambulance with first degree burns on her face and right arm. Heather DeSomer, seven, r 2 box 418 Syracuse, was taken to the fire station at 7:02 p.m. Monday by her mother, Ann DeSomer, after she fell and landed backwards while swinging on a rope in a tree. Crewmen placed an arm splint and advised her mother to take the child to Goshen Hospital. They said she suffered a possible fractured left wrist. Crewmen were summoned at 12:03 p.m. Tuesday to r 2 box 55 Syracuse, where Shirley Pearsall, 50, had become ill. The day before she had fallen backwards and became unconscious. The patient had a history of back problems, crewmen said. She

Nicholas Paflas April 12,1890— Sept. 25, 1978 Funeral services for Nicholas G. (Nick) Paflas, 88 of Lake Wawasee, who died at 10:30 p.m. Monday in Goshen Hospital, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the Yoder-Culp Funeral Home in Goshen. Paflas, formerly of 205 N. 2nd St., Goshen, was a long-time coowner of the Olympia Candy Kitchen on Main St. in Goshen. He had lived at Lake Wawasee for many years. Rev. Nickolas P.

Petropoulakos, pastor of Saint Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Violett cemetery. Friends are being received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today (Wednesday) in the i funeral home. A Masonic service will be held at 8 p.m. today. A native of Koliri, Greece, he was born April 12, 1890. He came to the United States from Greece in 1905 when he was 15 years old. He moved to Goshen in 1920 and ’ on July 9, 1924, with his nephew, Chris Angelo, purchased the candy kitchen. In March 1964, they sold their holdings in the Olympia to LaMar Paflas, son of Nick Paflas, but continued to assist with the operation of the business for many years. Paflas was a member of the Goshen Masonic Lodge, the Goshen Shrine Club and Saint / Greek Orthodox ChuFehof South Bend. On March 23, 1923, he married Leona Long. She died December 18,1967. Surviving are the son, LaMar of Goshen; two grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four brothers, Dan of Massillon, Ohio, and John, Ageleke and Penalope, all of Greece, and a sister, Mary, also residing in Greece.
