Milford's Main Strelet
Jr
OUR PHOTO this week is one that some may call an “oldie” while the men pictured will say it’s not so old. It was taken at a Lions meeting at the Melody Case some years back. We aren't telling who loaned us the photo, only that Paul Kizer found it and has indicated it is to be given to the Lions Club for its scrap book. Pictured around the table are Paul Rush, Charles Sponseller and Don Enyeart, all former Milford residents; Raymond Pinkerton, hidden; Ted Baumgartner; and our bossman Arch Baumgartner. Rush now lives in Syracuse, Sponseller is a resident of Michigan and Enyeart resides in Elkhart. Pinkerton is still an active member of the club as is AEB. Ted Baumgartner is no longer a member of the club. —o— SUZETTE HUNSBERGER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Hunsberger of r 1 Milford, participated in the Indiana State Rabbit Breeders Show September 16 and 17 in Indianapolis and came home with a number of wins. We were off Saturday morning for Goshen and the annual Mennonite relief sale and we were not alone. Thousands and thousands of people were at the Elkhart County Fair Grounds to see the quilts and purchase items from near and far. Proceeds from the event go to the Mennonite Central Committee with headquarters in Akron, Pa., for the relief and selfhelp programs. The sale set records with $243,581 being raised and between 40,000 and 50,000 persons attending the event. —o— THOSE WHO are disenchanted with this year’s Wawasee High School football team (0-5) should attend a Milford Junior High football game as the Trojans are 4-0 this season. —o— NOTRE DAME fans too are upset with the way the Irish have been playing thus far in the young season. Saturday's defeat by Michigan was the first time since the 1930 s that the Irish have lost back to back games at home. One of those defeats of the 30s was at the hands 0f... Michigan! —o— MILFORD RESIDENTS are boasting two of the tallest buildings in Kosciusko County. The new Maple Leaf Feed Mill,
located on the Milford-Syracuse Road, is 140 feet to the top ledge. The Ralston-Purina plant, located at Milford Junction, is 188 feet to the top, according to “Bud” Etsinger, Sr.;’ maintenance supervisor at the big R-P plant. Library nearing reality The North Webster-Tippecanoe Township library is nearing reality. Eight appointments to the library board have been named and a building found. Named to serve on the board are: Julia Rhoads, Vera Gillen, Gary Eastlund and George Switzer, made by the town board; and Suzanne J. Shock, Pauline Morgan, Mary Sullivan and Richard Long, appointed by the township. Mrs. Shock is the library board convening chairman. The first meeting of the board will be at 7:30p.m. tonight (Wednesday) in the North Webster town hall. Lions Donate Building The North Webster Lions Club has donated the use of its building located on the Mermaid Festival grounds for the library. Work is to commence soon to get the building ready. The dream for the community's first library began several months ago. Mrs. Shock, a library aid at North Webster Junior High School, contacted various organizations and individuals in the community to generate some support. She then took her proposal to the town board who, along with the Tippecanoe Township Advisory Board, gave full support through a joint agreement on September 6. The library board will be responsible for finding materials to stock the library and to set up an annual budget. Report area thefts Kenneth Koontz of North Webster reported to Kosciusko County police the theft of his car, stolen last Thursday night. Also reporting a theft was Richard Pickarski of South Bend and Lake Wawasee, who said a young boy dressed in a raincoat is suspected of stealing a fish locater worth $159.95 and rod and reel, valued at $26.95 while Pickarski’s boat was docked at Wawasee Plaza Marina. Also, Gladys Mignery, r 2 Syracuse, reported a ladies watch with six diamonds worth sll7, was taken from her residence on the east side of Lake Wawasee. Recognition dinner for bureau chief Mrs. James G. Purvis, r 4 Syracuse, was in Elkhart Monday night where she attended a recognition dinner for William W. (Bill) Cooke, Elkhart Bureau Chief for the South Bend Tribune for 36 years. The event was held in the Athenian Room of Greencroft Center, and was sponsored by the Elkhart Chamber of Commerce.
