W A special event happened at J the Calvary United Methodist JI Church in Syracuse this past § Sunday, Sept. 24. Betty Aph penzeller, church organist, ® displayed over 40 of her paintings for 150 visitors. ■ The show was especially ■ important as it was the first viewing of five religious works II she painted for the church. The paintings, based on first line of hymns, include: "Savior, I Like A Shepherd Lead Us," "Can A Growing Child Like Me Praise the Father Fittingly," "I Come to the Garden Alone," "When Peace Like a River H Flows Over My Soul" and "I Will I Make You F ishers of Men." ■ Mrs. Appenzeller said she was II asked to paint the pictures by the I church's board of trustees. She ■ decided to use hymns because "music is a part of my life." She has been church organist at H Calvary for the past 19 years.

The paintings represent her interpretation of the hymns. "They present a picture in your mind. I think God's been instrumental in talent. He gives )spu talent and you use it as best you can. The paintings went so easily. Like someone guiding you." She decided these works would be more special than the traditional religious works. These are the first religious paintings she has done. All the work on the pictures was done this past summer. She said about nine hours of work was done on each painting. First Show This was the first art show for Mrs. Appenzeller. The church has held several art sales to benefit the Lakeland Day Care Center in which she has participated. The Syracuse artist has been painting since 1968. She comes from an artistic family. Her uncle, Ken Harkless, is also a well known Syracuse artist. Her first teachers were Martin . and Margie Stevens from Middlebury. She has also studied under James Bordon, Vincenzo Mangione and Joseph Wrobel from the South Bend Art Center and June Walker from Elkhart. Also, Tony Van Hasselt and Alexander Kortner from the Delray Art Center in Florida. Her subject matter varies in her works, even though she prefers landscapes. "I like water. You kind of prefer the things you were raised with." Mrs. Appenzeller was born and raised in Syracuse and has lived in her present home on
