Wawasee swimming to winning season

By LESLIE WHITMAN Cindy Peterson, coach of the Wawasee High School girl’s swimming team, is optimistic about her team’s chances for success this year. “We’re going to have a good season,” she reports So far, her swimmers have broken three school records in just two meets and captured high honors in the Elkhart Central Diving Invitational last Saturday. Boody Brewer, junior freestyler, broke records in meets against Elkhart Memorial and Goshen in the 50 and 100-yard events. Her time is currently 27.1. A time of 26.9 qualifies for the state, which Peterson feels Brewer will have no problem matching. “Right now she’s as close to a state qualifier as I have.” Os course, not to be forgotten are top divers Tracy Rinker, junior, and Nancy Amos, senior. These two girls captured fourth and sixth places respectively in the diving invitational meet with 11 schools participating. Their scores earned Wawasee second place in team competition. Elkhart Central took first. Both divers will definitely be

going to the state, said coach Peterson. Team Has Spirit Not only does she have some good swimmers, Mrs. Peterson believes she has a team that wants to win. “They’ve got more spirit than any team I’ve ever had. They’re good swimmers; they’re good workers. ” One advantage to the Wawasee swimmers, commented the coach, is how well each event is covered. “We’ve got depth. We’ve got every event covered with two people.” The main area she is working on is building good times. The only two teams she is concerned about beating are Elkhart Central (October 3) and Warsaw (October 23). “Other than that we shouldn’t swim anyone that will beat us.” The girl swimmers will next meet Penn at Wawasee September 26 and Rochester at Wawasee September 30. Goshen relays are scheduled to be held September 30. One new event Wawasee will be competing in this season is the NLC Conference at Concord November 2-4. Peterson says this will give the girl’s swim teams in the conference a chance to have a conference match. Sectional play-offs are scheduled for November 9-11 with the state coming the following week end. Swimming seniors this year are Amos, Darsee Stahley, Laura Keen and Carmen Bryant. The team also includes eight juniors, 11 sophomores and 10 freshmen. Trojans defeat Yellow jackets In a game played at the Wawasee High School field on September 12, the North Webster Trojans defeated the Syracuse Yellowjackets by a score of 14 to 6. The Syracuse touchdown came early in the game when a North Webster fumble was run in for the score. The try for extra points failed. North Webster struck back in the fourth quarter with Steve Williams taking the ball in for the score. The try for extra points failed and at the end of regulation time the score stood at 6-6. The teams decided to play the overtime period and North Webster, having won the toss, had the ball first. Steve Williams carried the ball three times for Webster, scoring on his third run from scrimmage. He also carried the ball over the extra points. Syracuse then failed to score. Steve Williams was the offensive star of the game for the Trojans, carrying the ball 20 times for 94 yards and all of North Webster’s points. Todd Reiff and Doug Stump turned in outstanding defensive performances for the Trojans. Trojans 2-0 after defeating Fairfield The Milford Trojans stand 2-0 with the recent victory over the Fairfield Falcons, with a score of 16-0. Touchdowns were scored by Kevin Harney on a 58-yard-run and Rick Pena with a two-yard-dive up the middle. Extra points were scored by Ross Dahlstrom and Jeff Richards. Key interceptions, resulting in setting up a touchdown and stopping Fairfield’s longest drive, were made by Rick Pena and Ross Dahlstrom. Outstanding offensive players: Ross Dahlstrom and Jeff Richards. Outstanding offensive players: Eric Beer and Kevin Harney.
