Corn, sorghum loan program reopened The Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) recently reopened its 1977 corn and sorghum loan program for producers who. wish to put their grain into the reserve. The program will be open until September 29. “The extra time will give farmers the opportunity to put additional quantities of grain immediately into the reserve,” said Phil Braman of the local ASCS office. Record harvests of corn and sorghum are expected this year, and forecasts of a 6.8 billion bushel corn crop, nationally has caused some weakening in corn prices. “Storing the corn will help strengthen these prices and encourage more orderly marketing of grain,” Braman said. The reserve program takes grain off the market for a period of up to three years, or until market prices reach stated levels. It offers farmers short and long term benefits to counter the price depressing effects of surplus stocks. Farmers receive annual storage payments in advance and also reap the benefits of increased grain prices. To keep the grain in good condition during storage, farmers are allowed to rotate stock. “If the producer wants to take out the old grain and put in new grain, he may dq Sb with prior approval of the County ASC Committee, as long as he maintains quantity and quality.” For details of the farmerowned reserve program, contact the county ASCS office at 301 Gilliam Drive, Warsaw.
