Warrior swimmers break three school records Tuesday
Three school records were broken as the Wawasee girls swim team defeated the girls from Elkhart Memorial in the opening meet of the season last night. The final score was 89-83. School records were set as follows: Boodie Brewer in the 50 freestyle with a time of 27.3; Nancy Amos in diving with a score of 233.30; and Boodie Brewer in the 100 free with a time of 101.1. JV tennis team meets Minutemen
By KELLI PRICE The freshmen and sophomores of the Wawasee High School tennis team traveled to Concord last Saturday to take on the Concord junior varsity. Concord won the match 10-1. Playing number one singles for Wawasee was sophomore John Locke. He lost to Anthony Kirk in a close 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 three set match. Gregg Gant rallied at number two to also be defeated in a three set match 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 by Concord’s Nicky Zeiger. At number three, Dee Hinesley played Mark. Scholl to be defeated 6-4, 6-0. Ron Cripe, number four, was the only Warrior winner as he defeated Tony Zeiger 4-6,6-2,6-2.

Warrior number six, Mike Nordin, lost to Jim Zurawski 6-0, 6-1. Steve Koble played Al Winninger to be beaten 6-1, 6-2. David Coy versed Kevin Lentz at number eight losing 6-1,6-1. Mark Linn beat Warrior Tom Troup 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 and Joe Lehman claimed another Concord victory over Vince Price 6-4, 6-4. Tim Hubartt and Garth McClain combined to challenge Al Winninger and Kevin Lentz of Concord losing a 10 game pro set 10-3. This match brings the JV record to 1-6. Although presently unscheduled, more freshmansophomore matches are planned for later in the season by Coach Baker.

ATMAXWELTQN “Most one Putt Greens’’ was the play of the day for Maxwelton lady golfers on September 6. It was a tie between six members in the 18-hole group — Maggie Smith, Dot Stiver, Margie Purdum, Ginny Lomont and Betty Kline. Winners in the nine-hole group were, first, Marge Thornburg; second, Ces Freehill; third, Inez Beiswanger. The last Ladies Day will be September 27, with a pot luck. Also, members are to sign up for “Alternate Shots” which will be play of the day. September 30 and October 1 a Mixed Scramble is being held for any lady who has an established handicap. RECEIVES DEGREE — Vicky Nyikos of Syracuse was the recipient of the master of science in elementary education degree, during a ceremony at Pensacola Christian College, Pensacola, Fla. She had previously studied at Zion Theological Seminary, Indiana Baptist College, and received her bachelor’s degree from Crossroads Bible College of Farmland. She has attended Pensacola Christian College for the past three summers and completed the master’s program on July 26 of this year. Miss Nyikos is the primary principal at the Syracuse Christian Schools of Syracuse. Craig Sorensen returns to school Craig Sorensen has returned to his classes at Tri-State University, Angola. ANOTHER BUILDING TRADES HOME — The afternoon class of the Wawasee Building Trades class put down the stakes Friday for a new two-story corner lot house on an 82 x 130 lot in W oodland Acres, south and a little east of Wawasee High School. It will have 1,800 square feet of space. Their instructor. Gene Duesler, said two classes will be working on the house, which they hope to complete during the present school year. Warriors lose to Columbia City 4-1
By KELLI PRICE The Columbia City tennis team traveled to Wawasee’s courts last Friday, Sept. 8, to challenge the Warrior varsity tennis players. Columbia City went home the winner as they won the match 4-1. Greg Carpenter played number one singles for Wawasee and lost his match 6-3, 6-1. Rod Hamman was defeated 6-3, 6-2 at number two singles by Pat Ball of Columbia City. John Locke claimed a win for WHS by beating Mark Lawrence 6-2,7-5. In doubles, Jeff Coy and Randy Roth combined City power to defeat Wawasee’s Mike Bran-nock-Gregg Gant number one team 6-3, 6-2. Dee Hinesley and Logan Jones were defeated by Mark Shively and Roger Torres to give Columbia City their fourth Syracuse man enters guilty plea Steven Botchuck, 28, of Syracuse, was one of a trio of men who each entered pleas of guilty to rape, criminal deviant conduct, robbery and confinement, in their criminal trial last Friday in Noble Circuit Court. The charges were in connection with the kidnapping of a 21-year old Noble County woman on May 21, sexually assaulting her and then dumping her near Wakarusa. The other two were Donald Bifh, 22, of Wawaka; and Donald Conrad, 31, of Ligonier. The trio’s guilty pleas had the consent of the victim, her parents and investigating officers from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s department and Indiana State Police. Each defendant could face up to 64 years in prison. Judge Charles Quinn set their sentencing for September 27 at 9 a.m. in Noble Circuit Court. Botchuck and Conrad also face revocation of federal and state probation or parole. Botchuck has two prior felony convictions in Elkhart County, and Conrad has four prior felony convictions in state and federal court. The two had also been charged with being habitual offenders, and that charge was dismissed. Jury selection had already started in the trial when the three men changed their pleas to guilty. Fly rod is stolen Bruce Pierce, r 2 Leesburg, told police Wednesday, Sept. 6, that a handmade fly rod valued at $175, a S6O reel and a S2O fishing line were stolen from his residence near the Tippecanoe Boat Company.
