CHARGING TOWARDS GOAL — A Zebra tackle in the opening minutes of the first quarter Friday night stopped an unidentified Warrior here as he charged towards the goal line. The Warriors finally made it over the line for an early lead over Rochester. The lead was shortlived, however, as the Zebras bested the Warriors 27-13.
Warriors topped by Zebras
By JERI SEELY Wawasee’s loss to Rochester Friday night happened in what fans termed a very unimpressive football game. The Zebras put it together for four touchdowns — Wawasee could only manage two. The Warrior’s first touchdown came early in the game. The home team had won the toss and elected to receive. Dan Andrews and Dave Johnson went back. Andrews caught the kick on the 14-yard-line and ran it out to the 28. Senior Ray Gerber gained ground. A pitch out fell short and the team suffered a loss on the play. Johnson caught a pass from Andy Brown and ran for 15 yards and the first down. Brown, on a keeper, ran to the 38 for the second first down of the series. Gerber carried for no gain. An • incomplete pass was thrown to Johnson, then one that was good for a first down. The ball was on the 24-yard-line and the Warriors were making a good march. But, alas, a fumble gave the ball te Rochester. Rochester’s possession, however, was short-lived as Dave Stoffel intercepted a pass on the first try for the down and was back in business. pass to Johnson was complete and the Warriors were on the 25-yard-line. A pass to Gerber put the ball on the ball on the 14jand gave the green and gold a , first down. On the next play i Gerber was off the right side and

down to the nine-yard-line. Then it was Gerber on the one. And, Gerber in the end zone. Touchdown Wawasee. Andrew’s kick was good and the Warriors took the lead 7-0. While Rochester held the ball for considerable time during the next six minutes the Zebras were held and in due time were forced to punt to the Warriors. The punt was taken by Andrews who was met by a host of Zebras. Wawasee was in possession at the end of the first quarter. The Warriors started to move the ball again and then found themselves in trouble as Brown was caught behind the line and a holding penalty was called against the Warriors. It was first down and 30 to go. A fumble gave the ball to Rochester on the 22-yard-line. It was a fumble that would prove costly for the Warriors. Rochester’s Tom Arnett made a two-yard run and was in for a touchdown. A keeper by quarterback Steve Treglia on the conversion gave Rochester an 8-7 edge. The Warriors couldn’t seem to get it together. Andrews took the kick on the five and ran it to the 27-yard-line. Gerber got the ball and made a long gain, however a flag on the play for clipping made it first and 25 as the play was called back and yardage marched off against the Warriors. The Warriors found themselves in a fourth and nine situation. They were forced to punt. With 2:30 to go in the half Rochester began to move the ball in a series of first downs. All too soon Tregilia made a 10-yard pass to Mark Howkinson and Rochester had its second touchdown of the game. The conversion pass was incomplete. Thirteen seconds remained on the clock. The score: 14-7. Wawasee kicked to Rochester in the opening play of the second half and the Zebras were on their way for another score. The score came on a three-yard run by Arnett. The conversion attempt was stopped. The score: 20-7. It then appeared the Warriors too would score as Brown and company moved down field toward the goal line. But, alas, a Wawasee score was not to be —•

The ball was one the 11. little gain was made on the next play and it was second and nine. A pass went incomplete in the end zone. A fumble gave the bail to Rochester. The Zebras again began to move the ball toward the goal. Wawasee’s diving tackles failed to stop the advancing Zebras and they were soon on the four-yard-line. Kim Clay made a four-yard run and the Zebras were again on the scoreboard. The kick by Carey Rogers was good. The score: 27-7. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that things started to go Wawasee’s way. The Warriors took over the ball on downs. First and 10 soon became first and 11 and fans began to wonder. However, Brown went to the 39-yard-line on the next play on a keeper for the first down. A pass to Johnson gave the Warriors a second first down. Back to back flags against Rochester, one for a personal foul and the other on the bench, moved the ball downfield 30 yards farther into Rochester territory. A pass to Craig Batchelor put the ball on the nine-yard-line. Batchelor then carried to the one. He got the ball a third time and went over for the touchdown. The kick was blocked. The score: 27-13. It was the final score of the game. The Zebras were out front in almost all statistics for the night. Rochester had 23 first downs while Wawasee only managed 18. The '"Warriors had 120 yards rushing while Rochester had 246. On the other hand Wawasee topped the Zebras in passing with 101 for Rochester’s 97. Brown completed eight of 14 passes while Treglia completed nine of 14. Rochester made 75 offensive plays while Wawasee made 55. The Warriors fumbled the ball four times, losing three. Rochester fumbled the ball twice but did not lose it. Wawasee made the only Interception. Both teams punted three times. People in the U.S. consume eleven billion bananas annually, according to The. three games. But, Traviolia is optimistic about the rest of the season. He says, “We are still in the process of rebuilding from a down cycle. We are trying to get together and regroup.’’ One of the ways Traviolia is trying to accomplish this goal is by stressing teamwork. “You need less individual effort to sustain.” He also feels conditioning is important. “Were probably in better or as good of condition as we’ve ever been.” The coach said one disadvantage of the team this year is its size. “We’re physically a small team, the smallest since I’ve been here.” He added the first three teams the Warriors were up against — Warsaw, Goshen and Rochester — overpowered Wawasee’s team, especially in defensive line play. He also said the Warriors have had a few key injuries which have set them back. Ray Gerber, halfback, was injured during the Goshen game and will probably not see much action the rest of the season. Warriors this season is in numbers. Traviolia said the junior class is small in size. “You have to have adequate numbers to take care of injuries. With a school our size, you must average about 20-25 per class to participate and have adequate numbers.” This year, 13 juniors are on the team. Definite Improvement Overall, Traviolia said his squad is looking good. “One of the things we have to look forward to is we’ve seen definite improvement in our team. We can’t ask any more. The team has done its best.” He commented even with defeat, the team hasn’t lost its spirit. “As long as you can maintain improvement, your team doesn’t get mentally down. If a team knows it has played well, it doesn’t feel so bad about defeat.” Fan support has also helped the Warriors. “I think we have had good fan support. It’s easy for a community not to support a squad that has lost. We hope to maintain their support.” The head coach added his squad has faced its toughest competitors so far, especially Goshen. The other teams Wawasee has to be careful of, said Traviolia, are Plymouth (homecoming, October 6) and Concord (October 13). The Warriors will be up against New Prairie this Friday there starting at 7:30 p.m. The next home game is September 22 against Bremen. Besides Traviolia, coaching the Warriors are Dave Matz, varsity line coach; and assistant coaches Ted Mahnensmith and Neil Hinton.
