The Salvation Army has various programs and services in an effort to change despair into hope and aimlessness into purpose. These include help for the transient, counseling, guidance and referral of unwed mothers, alcoholics, shut-ins and a host of other services. Lake Papakeechie, were present. Mrs. Robert Goff presided for the meeting. Meditation was by Ann Griffey who read two poems, “Washday before Automatics” by June Bacher. Mrs. Shreve presented the afternoon program and talked on her hobby of tombstone epitaphs. She read a variety of epitaphs which were interesting, amusing, and sad, having visited old cemeteries all over the United States and doing research in numerous places to find history of the deceased persons. She also told of visiting a cemetery for animals which included a dog, horse, pig and canary. Response to roll call following the program was a white elephant gift exchange. Various reports were heard. The next meeting will be on October 4 when the club will go to Shipshewana for luncheon.

Annual Bike-A-Thon set for

diabetes, second at Warsaw

Bobby Knight, Indiana University basketball coach, will be honorary chairman of the fifth annual American Diabetes Association, Indiana AffiliateBurger Chef Bike-A-Thon, which is set for Sunday, Oct. 1. Knight announced that the event is the second largest Bike-A-Thon in the country and will be held in 42 Hoosier cities. Area cities include Warsaw, Rochester, Kendallville and Columbia City. Monies raised go to support efforts in research, education and detection, and for a camp near Martinsville for children with diabetes. Warsaw Area Charles Blankenship, chairman of the biking group at Warsaw and a member of the board of directors for the Kosciusko County Chapter of the diabetes association, said the event will start at 9 a.m. on October 1 (rain date, October 8) and be concluded by 5 p.m. Any one with a bicycle can enter the event and ride as long or as short a distance as desired. Riders must sign sponsors who are willing to contribute to the diabetes association, and payment is based on the number of miles the rider completes, multiplied by the amount per mile pledged. Prizes for each route for participants under 17 years of age will be: First, 10-speed bicycle; second, SSO savings bond; third, tennis racquet; and fourth, an AM-FM radio. Blankenship added that the ride here will be by police escort, and participants should wait for the caravan. This is the second annual biking event at Warsaw according to Blankenship, with 28 participating last year for a total of $2,000 being raised. Entry forms are available at oarticipating merchants displaying the Bike-A-Thon signs. A list of biking hints for safe riding is available from the association on diabetes.
