THE FLAG OF MEXICO

Diez y sies De Septiembre celebration this Sunday

On Sunday, Sept. 17, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Milford, will be celebrating “Diez y Sies De Septiembre.” On September 15,‘ 1810, a Creole priest named Miguel Hidalgoy Costilla launched the Mexican War of Independence. In the town of Delores (now Delores Hidalgo), he called Indians and Mestizos to church. Hidalgo raised the Grito de Dolores (cry of Dolores) in which he demanded independence from Spanish rule. Today the president of Mexico rings the church bell late every September 15 and repreats the Grito. • f Pictured are the flag of Mexico and Our Mother of Guadalupe. Both were carried by the Mexicans during their war for independence. All Mexicans celebrate September 16 as their Independence Day. In Milford a eucharistic service will be celebrated by Father Tomas Lemos. A talk about Independence Day in Mexico will be given by a Mexican American priest and a candle and craft booth will be operated by the youth of the church.
