By J ER I SEELY It was a much improved Wawasee Warrior team that invaded Foreman Field at Goshen last Friday night. Fourteen seconds after the opening kick Wawasee was on the scoreboard. Senior Dave Johnson took the kick on the four-yard-line and went all the way— 96 yards —for the touchdown. The extra point try by Dan Andrews was good. The clock showed 11:46 remaining in the quarter. The score: 7-0. Wawasee’s lead, however, was short lived. A series of back to back first downs gave Goshen the ball in Warrior territory and sooner than Warrior fans might have liked, Goshen’s Craig Harris was over the line for a GHS score. Walter Drapeza’s kick was good and the score was tied at 7 all. The Warriors were forced to punt a short time later and Goshen again moved the ball toward the goal line. During the game the Redskins would gain 408 yards by rushing and 64 yards by passing while the Warriors would would only gain 78 yards rushing and 112 passing. Goshen would also double the Warriors in first downs as the Redskins had 22 and the Warriors had 11. All too soon the Redskins were within scoring range and Drapeza kicked from 25 yards out. The field goal was good. The score was 10-7. Shortly after the start of the second quarter Goshen had the ball on the Warrior’s 18-yard-line and it looked as though the Redskins would score again. On the next play Mike Clark in

Warriors stopped by Goshen
tercepted the ball and the Warriors were in command for a short time. A fumble on the next play was recovered by Johnson as the Warriors retained possession on the 21-yard-line. A pass to Johnson gave the gold and green a first down. The Warriors would get two more first downs before being forced to punt. The Redskins were out for scalps. They moved the ball down field and were soon on the seven-yard-line of the visiting Wawasee Warriors. A short time later Craig Harris went in and it was 16-7. Drapeza’s kick was good. The score: 17-7. Only 56 seconds remained in the half. Goshen got the kick to open the second half and turned it into an additional seven points. Again the ’Skins moved the ball down field at a rapid pace, making long gains on each play. A pass to Tim Jordan from Harris and another Drapeza kick made the score 247. Improved Team Even though the score was beginning to show Goshen the stronger of the two teams. Warrior fans could not help but notice the team’s improvements. An intercepted pass by Ron Gillis and the Redskins were soon back across the line for another score. The kick was good. The score was 31-7. Johnson ran the kick back to the 47-yard-line before being stopped. A first down was followed by a second and the Warriors were on the move. The ball was on the 20-yard-line. Wawasee held possession at the end of the quarter. However, Goshen pulled out all the stops
and Wawasee was forced to turn the ball over on downs. All hopes for a second touchdown came to an end. Goshen had problems too and the ‘Skins soon found themselves in a fourth and 20 situation. They were forced to punt to Wawasee. The punt was short. It went out of bounds on the 31-yard-line. Ray Gerber, who saw little action because of a shoulder injury, got a first down for Wawasee. The ball was on the 20 once again. The Warriors were close. Could they make it this time qr would Goshen’s powerhouse stop them again? Thad Tinkey carried. It was second and six.
