"So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called the place of the skull... There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them... After this Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfil the scripture), "I thirst." A bowl full of vinegar stood there; so they put a sponge full of the vinegar of hyssop and held it up to his mouth. When Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, "It is finished"; and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit (John 19:17-30 RSV)" The cross has always stood as a symbol in the church. Rev. David M. Hudson, pastor of the Syracuse United Pentecostal Church, says, "The cross is suffering and shame and despair. It stands as the focal point of Christianity." Rev. Hudson added, "The cross is the instrument of punishment used by Romans generally for punishment of slaves, trials or misfortunes, especially' when considered as tests of Christian faith." the cross in the Bible. In Matthew 16:24-28, it states, "Then Jesus told disciples, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up hisk / cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world and forfeit his life? Or shall a man give in return for his life? For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay every man for what he has done. Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."' Also in Matthew, in chapter 27:32, it reads, "As they were marching out, they came upon a man of Cyre'ne, Simon by name; this man they compelled to carry his cross." Power of God The cross is again mentioned in Corinthians 1:17-18. Here, it states, "For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ

be emptied of its power. For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." Another reference to the cross can be found in Galatians 6:14. Here, it reads, "But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucifed to me, and I to the world." In Colossians 2:13-14, it states, "And you, who were dead in trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven all our trespasses, having cancelled the bond which stood against us with its legal demands; this he set aside, nailing it to the cross." Finally, in Hebrews 12:2, reads, "looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God." These pictures represent some of the crosses that can be found in area churches.
