NORTHERN TOWNS UW CO-CHAIRMEN — Nancy (Mrs. Tom) Prickett, left, and Barbara L. Mort are serving as co-chairmen for this year's United Way drive in an area known as Northern Towns, including Syracuse, North Webster, Milford, Leesburg and Atwood. Their appointment was recently announced by James Benzenberg, executive director of this year’s UW drive. They are making plans for the Thursday noon kick-off luncheon at South Shore golf club where area captains and community goals will be announced. Mrs. Prickett has been a UW volunteer in the past and served on the board of directors. She is a real estate broker, a resident of 212 South Lake Street, Syracuse, and mother of four. Mrs. Mort recently moved to the Syracuse community from North Manchester where she served as neighborhood chairman for the residential campaign in that community for several years. She is manager of First Federal Savings & Loan of Wabash. Syracuse Branch, resides at Harbor Side Condominiums, and the mother of three.
United Way goal is *315,000, campaign starts September 7
United Way of Kosciusko County has set its 1978 goal at $315,000. The fund raising event begins Thursday. Sept. 7, in the northern communities. Timm Bledsoe, general chairman, says “people helping people” is the theme behind the United Way. This yearly campaign involves many volunteer workers who will be contacting industry, small business, institutions and individuals asking for contributions. Contributions given to the United Way help support 21 agencies in Kosciusko County. Some of these agencies include: Home Health Care, which provides part time professional
Area drivers involved in three accidents
Kosciusko County police have investigated three separate traffic accidents involving area people. At 7:18 p.m. August 26, two autos were damaged in the extent of $1,300 in a two-car crash on Old Rd. 13A, five miles east of Syracuse. One of the drivers was Susan S. Hill, 40, r 2 Runaway Bay Syracuse, who was southbound on the road and came into a curve too wide. The Hill car reportedly crossed the center of the road and hit a car driven by Martin Scott, 28, r 9 Columbia City, owned by Industra Products, Inc., Brighton, Mich. On August 28, two and one-half

(Tom) Stricter is leaving Milford today (Wednesday) to return to the Panama Canal Zone where he makes his home and serves as Civil Defense Officer, Chief, Civil Defense, Canal Zone Government. His office is located in I Balboa Heights, C.Z. Strider is the brother of Julia Myers and uncle of Mrs. Robert (Sally) Cline of Milford. He has been in the United States for 10 days, five in Vermont where he attended a Civil Defense conference and five in Milford with his relatives. miles north of North Webster, police said a car driven by Marc R. Fry, 20, r 4 Syracuse, traveling southbound on SR 13, crossed the road and went through a lawn owned by Doug Jernigan. Damage was set at SSO each to the car and lawn. An accident occurred August 27 on SR 13, one and one-half miles south of North Webster, with total damage estimated at $250. Police said Sandra J. Barnes, 31 of Chicago, was northbound on the state road and was attempting to turn left onto CR 400 N when her auto was struck from behind by a car operated by Robert L. Sylvester, 19, r 2 Milford.
Opening enrollment shows decrease of 92 students i
Opening enrollment figures in the Lakeland Community School Corporation have been released by Don Arnold, superintendent. a Tentative enrollment is 3,122. This compares with the certified 1977 figures of 3,215 and indicates a probable decrease in the certified enrollment for 1978. The official count for the coming school year will be taken September 15.
School tax levy increase from 14’ to 15’ to raise $ 61,893
The Lakeland Community School Corporation Board of Trustees met in special session last Thursday night, Aug. 31, to approve the proposed budget for 1979. Three citizens from the Community Awareness for Better Education were the only visitors present. After responding to several

When it is completely through the Congress of the United States it will be the law of the land. It will then be up to those in the Canal Zone and in the United States to make sure it works. Strider retired from the Amry in Panama in 1971 and since that time has been working for the Canal Zone Government as Civil Defense Officer. questions, the board passed a resolution to be directed to the State Tax Control Board requesting an increase in the local tax levy from 14 cents to 15 cents to raise an additional $61,893. The increase is to cover the added costs of maintaining and operating the vocational building built in 1973 and the addition presently under construction at Wawasee High School. An increase in the tax levy for construction since 1972 is now possible due to legislation passed in 1977. Mason files complaint against Carl Eisfelder
John C. (Jack) Mason, box 243 Syracuse, has filed a complaint in United States District Court, South Bend, against Carl Eisfelder, r 3 Syracuse. The suit is in response to a case brought before Kosciusko County Court on May 3, 1978, when Mason was charged with illegal excavation below the water line of Lake Wawasee. The state, represented by Eisfelder, a wet lands biologist for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, contended that Mason Two car crash in Milford Arthur Gilbert, r 1 Milford, was involved in a two-car accident at the intersection of Main and Emeline St., in Milford, Saturday, Sept. 2. Betty M. Dotson, 1516 May St., Warsaw, was driver of the second car. According to Milford Town Marshal David Hobbs, Miss Dotson was heading south on Main Street approaching Emeline St., when Gilbert, who had stopped, started through the intersection, being hit by the Dotson vehicle. Damage was estimated at S4OO to the Gilbert auto and $l5O to the Dotson auto.

Teacher Resignation In other business, the board accepted the resignation of Neil Hinton, science teacher at Wawasee High School. Hinton, a new teacher, had requested to be relieved of his contract due to personal reasons. Following the meeting, board members met in executive session to discuss teacher negotiations. A salary settlement has not yet been reached in the dispute.

Syracuse man arrested after near head-on A Syracuse man, Christopher Kent Cook, 23, of Leeland Shores, was arrested early last Friday for public intoxication following a near head-on collision on Old Rd. 30 west, near the Fox Farm Rd. Cook was booked at the county jail in Warsaw at 3:45 a.m. He was also cited for driving under the influence of intoxicating beverages. Warsaw city patrolman Paul Schmitt said he was on patrol when he saw two vehicles nearly collide head-on on Old Rd. 30. He followed the Cook auto as it turned north on Fox Farm Rd.
Wawasee High School —1,028 North Central Co-op — 10 Superintendent Don Arnold said a few more students should show up following the Labor Day week end. A decrease in students will affect the total amount of state financial aid the corporation receives since it is based on the number of students in the school on September 15. State aid per pupil is SBS. General Chamber of Commerce meeting Sept. 13 A general meeting of members and potential members and guests of the Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber of Commerce is scheduled to be held next Wednesday evening, according to Mrs. James Caskey, publicity chairman for the Chamber of Commerce. A meeting will be held at 7 p.m., followed by a buffet dinner at 7:30. A slide program is scheduled for about 8:30 p.m. by Warsaw Mayor H. Dale Tucker, relative to commercial and industrial development in Kosciusko County. The mayor has given the program to area groups and to groups in a number of Indiana cities in an effort to attract industry to this county. Mrs. Caskey said reservations should be turned into her or to Robert McNary. Members are urged to take potential members and guests. Mrs. Caskey stated. Two-car crash on Labor Day Syracuse police investigated a two-car crash at 5 p.m. on Labor day at Pickwick Rd. and CR 530E. Police said a 1975 Dodge, driven by Noble E. Yoder, 78, 212 S. 10th St., Goshen, was stopped for the sign on 530E and did not see the other car when he started to turn left. Damage to his auto was estimated at $550. The other driver was Audrey Barnett, 49, r 1 North Webster, whose 1972 Mercury was damaged to the extent of $l,lOO. On Wednesday, Aug. 30, police investigated an accident at 4:05 p.m. at S. Huntington and E. Henry Sts. Police said Paul E. Geiger of Cincinnati, Ohio, applied the brakes on his 1969 Ford to avoid another car. Following Geiger, who had a boat trailer on his car, was a 1971 Chevrolet driven by Jon H. Angel, 23, r 2 North Webster, who hit the boat trailer from the rear. Total damage was estimated at $450.

Hobbs recovers . stolen van

The 15-year-old told the officer he did not have his | t license in his possession at that 1 time. He also told the officer the i j van belonged to his mother. < In a license plate check the vehicle was found to be stolen. ; Upon returning to the van the 15- > year-old was frisked. From this I Hobbs found a marijuana pipe in : the pocket of the subject and two i ! cans of opened beer on the van floor. 1 Hobbs then proceeded to ; question the second suspect, who ’ was 17 years old. Break-ins reported
Milford Town Marshal David Hobbs is investigating two breakins which occurred in Milford Tuesday night. A total of $9.74 in change and a Minor damage in Goshen mishap Damage set at $550 resulted Tuesday night in a two-car accident on Kercher Road in Goshen. A 1972 Plymouth, driven by Darcy R. Dean, 19, 207 S. Huntington St., Syracuse, was hit by a 1967 Buick driven by Robert W. Hostetler, Jr., 17, 114 Kercher Rd., as Hostetler was attempting to back into the driveway of his residence. No one was injured.

When the officers searched the van. two bags with money were found, under the carpet. One bag contained $967 and the other SB4 and an undisclosed amount of checks. Both youths were arrested after questioning and giving voluntary statements. The 15-year-old turned himself in to North Webster Town Marshal Charles Parker. He told police he had stolen the van early that morning and had picked up the other youth, who was walking from Milford to his residence and they decided to drink the beer in the van. He also stated that he did not know the money was there. The older youth stated that he had no knowledge that van was stolen or of the presence of the money. Both were, booked at the Kosciusko County jail. The younger of the two was charged with illegal consumption of alcoholic beverages by a minor and fleeing a police officer. He is presently on probation from the Indiana Boys School. The 17-year-old was charged with illegal possession of alcohol by a minor and was later released by the authority of Juvenile Officer Tom Roe.

Trash fire Thursday Syracuse fire trucks were called at 9:27 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30. to a trash fire a quarter mite south bf US 6 on SR 13. Firemen extinguished the fire, using 200 gallons of water. Owner of the property is Stan Nichols.
