WITH THE start of school this week we couldn't resist this photo of the late Odell Troup with the tourney trophies of 1931. The photo is from the collection of Bill Rex of North Webster, formerly of Milford. Troup. Rex. Hoy Jones. George Haab and Foy Haney were the starting five for the championship Trojan team. -0A NUMBER of area women, including several from Our Town, were on hand last Wednesday noon at the South Shore Golf Club for a luncheon honoring Marj Fithian, wife of Second District Congressman Floyd Fithian. Accompanying Mrs. Fithian was the couple's 16-year-old son. John. The lad has been in Indiana the entire summer working on his dad’s campaign crew. He will not return to the family's Virginia home until the day before he is to begin his high school classes for the fall term. Besides talking to the women about her husband's campaign, Mrs. Fithian thanked the ladies for being interested in the election. She said that fewer than five per cent of the people ever do anything for an election. She urged ail present to stimulate interest in the election. With no presidential, senatorial or governatorial candidates on the ballot this fall it is hard to get people motivated. Mrs. Fithian noted the registration deadline is October 7 and stressed the point that now is the time to talk about registration. She also answered questions voiced by several ladies, and chatted informally with many before leaving for Plymouth where she will meet her husband. Tomorrow her schedule has her in Lafayette and then she will be going back to Washington to work in her husband's office there. —o— CAMPAIGNS SEEM to be off and running as Second District Congressional candidate Phil Oppenheim held a dinner with county realtors at Warsaw Wednesday noon. Area residents were present at that meeting too. And. The M-J's political column will be back in the paper in the very near future. —o— A FEW weeks back we printed a number of questions on Lake Michigan. Now it’s time for the answers to see how many of our readers knew the correct answers. They follow: The lake has 22,400 square miles of water. Its volume is 1,165 cubic miles Its average depth is 276 feet. Its maximum depth is 923 feet. It is 304 miles long and 117 miles wide. Lake Michigan has 1,661 miles of shoreline, of which 590 miles is plagued by erosion. It is about the size of West Virginia.

It has 173 trillion gallons of water. -oHOW ABOUT that new sign at the bank! It even tells the time and the temperature. -o— A NUMBER of new homes are being built in the area —two that cotne to mind are those of the Don Buchers and Bruce Bultemeiers. Don and Peggy are building on the Bucher farm near Dewart Lake while Bruce and Betty are building just east of Milford on property formerly owned by Max Beer Also negotiation for property in the latter area is a local church with plans for a new building. -oWARRIOR FOOTBALL fans were happy to learn Friday night the promised access road to the west has been opened behind the home bleachers. This enables Milford fans to head west out of the field instead of having to go around in a circle, quite often out to SR 13. before heading for Milford after home events. -oSPEAKING OF the football game, the band presented the prize winning routine that won at the North Webster Mermaid Festival during the half-time activities Friday. —oTHE MILFORD Lions were out of trophy position during the district golf outing last Wednesday by a slim margin. -oCHEERLEADER HEATHER

Beer of near Our Town was at Friday’s football game in uniform but on crutches! — o— NOW COMES Bessie (Mrs Bill > Nyce. r 5 Syracuse ( Dewart Lake area) with fond memories of the old barn that appeared in this column a week ago, know n as the Redmons Poultry Ranch barn. Mrs. Nyce says our article, as reported by Kich Baumgartner, that the barn was located at Redmon Park at Dewart Lake where the old store was located was incorrect. Rather, it was located on the site along the Dewart Lake road where the Dewart Lake Marina, operated by Elmer Vanes, is located When the poultrv business fizzled, says Mrs. Nyce. William Redmon operated a chocolate syrup factors in this building and also processed jelly and jams that were sold to a wide market. The plant was operated by the late Eldon Wyland and his wife Mildred. As that business declined, the building was torn down (about 1950) and the marina eventually constructed Mrs Nyce and her late husband Bill bought an old bank barn off of that property (not the barn in question).
