Labor Day Week End tours

The Labor Day week end is the last big week end of summer and has become the traditional end of the vacation season in the United States. To help area motorists and their families enjoy this last hurrah of summer, the Chicago Motor Club-AAA has complied

this list of selected week end destinations.Illinois Galena - Located in the far northwestern part of the state. Galena is famous for probably the finest period architecture in the midwest. Among the sites worth seeing is the Ulysses S. Grant home on Bouthillier and Fourth streets; the Galena Historical Museum, JI 1 S. Bench Street; Dowling House, Main and Diagonal Streets; Market House State Memorial, Commerce Street ; and the Stockade on Main Street. Shawnee National Forest - In the Shawnee Hills of Southern Illinois, this 242,215-acre forest extends from the Mississippi Rivfr eastward to the Ohio. Os interest are the strangely eroded rock formations that are found in the Garden of the Gods area. A network of trails and scenic drives interlace the forest. Nearby towns include Carbondale and Harrisburg. Fort Kaskaskia State Park — This state park, a 238-acre memorial to the early French and American pioneers who brought civilization to the Illinois wilderness, is located in the far southwestern portion of Illinois. It is situated atop a high bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. From the site of the fort, Kaskaskia Island can be seen separated from the Illinois mainland by a channel of the Mississippi River. This island is the only portion of Illinois located west of the great river. Indiana Pokagon State Park - This 1,175-acre Hoosier favorite is five miles north of Angola on US 27 on the shores of Lake James and Snow Lake. There are deer, elk and buffalo corrals. Facilities are provided for boating, swimming, horseback riding, archery, tennis and other favorite sports. Columbus — Located approximately 33 miles south of Indianapolis and just east of 1-65 on SR 46, this south-central Indiana city is one of the most unique communities in the country. For the past two decades the people of Columbus

have held advanced architectural achievement as a major interest of their lives. In so doing, schools, banks, churches, a library, canopied block-front and a golf course are just some of the many landmarks that designed by world-famous architects Harry Weese, Eero and Eliel Saarinen, 1. M. Pei, Alexander Girad and Robert Trent Jones. Wisconsin Kettle Moraine — This excellent recreation area has two parts. The northern unit has over 21,000 acres while the southern area includes more than 11,000. Characterized by glacial hills and depressions known as “kettles” the area is known for interesting woodlands, swamps, peculiar pop-up hills and glacial geological oddities. Recreation areas offer swimming, boating and horseback riding. Door County — The Door County Peninsula comprises one of the most unusual vacation lands in the Great Lakes region. Its eastern shore is washed by Lake Michigan - its western shore by Green Bay, whose waters have carved a varied array of bluffs, bays, islands and harbors. Sixteen county parks and four state parks are within 250 miles of scenic shoreline. Well known communities are Ellison Bay, Gills Rock and Jacksonport. Nicolet National Forest - Covering 650.000 acres in the northern Wisconsin lake region, this vast tract is approached by many main highways. Nearby towns include Rhinelander. Eagle River. Green Bay, Marinette and Three Lakes. New Glarus — One of Wisconsin's most picturesque tourist towns again offers its famous Wilhelm Tell Festival for the delight of ail who attend. This Labor Day Week End festival offers a Swiss pageant, art show and many community events. Also worth seeing at New Glarus is the Chalet of the Golden Fleece, the Swiss Miss Lace Factory and the Swiss Museum Village. Michigan South Haven - Located on

Lake Michigan's eastern shore this area was a bustling international seaport before the Saint Lawrence Seaway was on the planning board. Today, South Haven is a popular summer vacation area noted for its coho and Chinook salmon fishing. Wawasee family takes ski honors Several members of a Lake Wawasee and Elkhart family took honors in the 12th Mississippi Valley Open Ski tournament, held in - Dubuque, lowa, on the week end of August 19-20. Dr. William (Bill) Tully placed third in tricks and third in jump, in the senior men’s division. Jill Tully placed second in slalom, second in tricks, and third in jump, in the girls’ division; and Jane Tully placed first in tricks, first in jump with a 66 foot jump and second in slalom. The two girls are the children of Dr. and Mrs. Tully, and all are members of the Camelot Lake ski team. Entrants in the ski tournament came from lowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana.

Wawasee FFA team to go to nationals

By placing second in the State Horticulture Judging contest during the Indiana State Fair, a Wawasee Future Farmers of America team has earned the right to represent Wawasee High School in the National Horticulturejudging contest. The national contest is sponsored by the National Junior Horticulture Association as a part of its national convention which will be held this year in Cleveland, Ohio during the latter part of October. The local team of Brian Roberts, Judy Wall, Raymond Hively and Ed Clayton scored a total of 1.129 points out of a possible 1.300 to place second The contest consists of being able to identify over 150 different vegetables, flowers, fruits and ornamentals. The contestants must also be able to grade fruit and vegetable samples and complete a written quiz covering horticultural practices. Another Wawasee FFA team, comprised of Kay Ferverda. Mike Shock and Judi Ferverda. finished 11th in the state contest. Team members were

recognized during the annual FFA summer cookout held at the Flowing Well park south of North Webster. FFA members, their parents and guests were treated to a hamburger fry prepared by the, Wawasee Young Farmers organization. LAKELAND LOCAL Mrs. Lillian Custer of Leesburg celebrated her 84th birthday Sunday with a dinner party. Guests attending were Mrs. Charlotte Cooper and son. William of South Bend; Mrs. Arnold Dierks, Mr, and Mrs. Chris Dierks and sons, Brian and Dennis, all of Sidney; Mr. and Mrs. Myrtus Dierks. Julie and Eric of Pierceton; Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Lotz and daughter, Jennifer, of Claypool; and Susan Cooper of South Whitley. Peppers are good sources of vitamin C.
