Mabel Weaver, 61, 718 Front St., died Monday morning at 12:55a.m. in Goshen Hospital due to complications. Surviving are her husband, Clyde, her mother, four sons, one daughter, and 17 grandchildren. Connie Hoopingarner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Hoopingarner, r 1 Syracuse, was named Queen of the County 4-H Fair Monday night in the Warsaw auditorium. AUG. 7,1968 The Ken Harkless Wawasee Boat Co., Inc., with a 40-year history of service to Lake Wawasee sportsmen, was purchased this week by Clif Kinder and Phil Kinder, according to a joint announcement by Ken Harkless and Clif Kinder. A request for a $2.87 per SIOO of taxable property is being published in this issue of The Mail-Journal by the officers of the town of Syracuse. This is an increase of 40 cents over the 1968 rate of $2.47. In a special meeting held Monday evening, members of the Syracuse Town Board accepted one resignation and made three key appointments. The resignation was from clerktreasurer Walter Calnon. Appointed were: Ronald Sharp, clerk-treasurer; Orville Vander Reyden, town marshal, and Ron Robinson, deputy marshal. Coach Don Storey and his coaching assistants held their first football meeting on Aug. 1, attended by about 80 prospective football candidates. The first day of practice is Aug. 15. Carl Thomas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Theo Thomas of Syracuse, is aboard the aircraft carrier, the John Hancock, for the next eight months, en route to Hawaii, Japan and Viet Nam. Mr. Putt will return in several weeks, but Mrs. Putt plans to visit in California before returning home. 45 YEARS AGO, AUG. 10,1933 Announcement is made of the marriage of Miss Opal Garrison, teacher of the first grade for several years, and Elmer Evans, the ceremony being performed July 31 at the bride’s home in North Manchester. Friday just after sundown, when R. M. Pentreath was fishing on Lake Wawasee, he caught a five lb. wall-eyed pike. He was using artificial bait and was trolling. O. L. Mummert of the north shore of Wawasee also caught a wall-eyed pike this season. Joseph Walter Freeman of Syracuse is one of 98 young men chosen by DePauw University to share in $78,400 worth of scholarships just awarded. Fred Hoopingarner is complaining that since he has obtained the blue eagle of the NRA and is abiding by the hours specified for his employe, that he has to clean up the garage for his help in the morning. The McClintic reunion was held at Posey Inn, Buttermilk Point, Sunday. Officers re-elected for the coming year are Eston E. McClintic, president, and Lizzie Leamon, secretary-treasurer. Reminder given to insurance policy holders In the last few weeks, numerous wheat losses have been reported to the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation located at 513 Main Street in Rochester, by area farmers. Freda Ault of that office has reminded farmers holding wheat policies to check their 1978 wheat production against guarantees, and if they think they would be eligible to file a claim, to contact the Rochester office immediately. Investigations continue at North Webster Kosciusko county police continue investigation into several incidents this past week at North Webster. George Stidham of r 1 reported his front window was shot out by vandals sometime Monday night or Tuesday morning, in what appeared to be a BB gun incident. Value of damage was set at $25. Arnold Culver of r 1 North Webster reported the theft of an aluminum fishing boat and oars last week at a avalue of S2OO.

John Mason files suit asking for *IOO,OOO relief

John C. Mason, Syracuse, has filed a lawsuit in Kosciusko Circuit Court asking for an extension of his permit to construct a seawall and relief of SIOO,OOO. This lawsuit was filed in response to a motion for acquittal handed down by Judge Loren K. Collier, Kosciusko County Court, in May. A suit had been filed against Mason and Joseph D. Graber in May of 1977 saying the two had been illegally excavating below the line of lake without a permit. A permit, issued by Joseph D. Cloud of the Department of Natural Resources was shown into evidence. Judge Collier then contended that the state had failed to prove its case in the judgment. At that time. Mason commented he might be seeking

relief. Permit Has Expired In an interview last Friday, Mason said due to all the legal delays his permit has expired and the state will not issue him a new one. He said, “This is a suit ordering them to issue me a permit for a seawall. My permit has expired, so now they’re saying they won’t issue me a new one. ” He is also asking for relief of SIOO,OOO contending that his property is worth this much less without a seawall. He was originally issued a permit on January 14, 1977. He later asked for an extension after charges were filed against him on September 10, 1977. He was later informed in February of this year that his permit will not be extended.

Mason added, “I feel if they issue Mr. Smith a permit they should issue Mr. Mason one.” He also commented Friday he will be seeking federal relief. “There will be some federal Supreme Court violations filed.” Due to a new court ruling, a state employee is not immune from a lawsuit in certain cases. Reports items taken from home s Jerry Davis of Lynnwood Drive, Syracuse, reported to Syracuse police last Friday of a break-in and theft from his home.
