His speech centered on how government and business work hand in hand to help the economy. Traffic noise from the highway, during Lt. Gov. Orr’s speech, brought a comment on how he did not mind the noise because, the trucks passing by meant economy was moving and there was someone on either end, transporting and receiving. “It’s vital for you as leaders in business to believe in economy, and to assure the economy in

Cooking for 1 or 2

Is you refrigerator full of leftovers that you’ll eventually throw out because they've spoiled? It happens to homemakers who, having once cooked for a large family, find they are having a hard time adjusting to cooking for just one or two, says Arleen Arnold, Michigan State University’s food marketing agent in Detroit. If your refrigerator is in the shape mentioned, it would be a good idea to sit down and do some rethinking. Once upon a time, you served vegetables and salads and made your children eat them “because they’re good for you.” Well, now the children are all grown and gone, but that’s not the signal to stop serving vegetables and salads. They’re “good for you,” too. In fact, if you expect to stay healthy and vigorous, you’ll have to watch your own nutrition now. And, if you’re going to avoid those dribs and drabs in the refrigerator, you’re going to have to shop and cook more thoughtfully. If your doctor has you on a special diet you will, of course, have to follow his directions. However, if you don’t require a special diet, you will still have to have an adequate supply of 10 basic nutrients: protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins A, 81, 82, C, niacin, calcium and iron There are another 35 or more nutrients we all need, but if you get enough of the basic 10 and if you eat a varied diet, you won’t need to worry about the others — you’ll get them in your food. If you are not so active as you once were you require less food, but variety is still important. You should eat some of each of the

four food groups each day. The breads and cereals group includes whole grain, enriched or fortified bread, cereal, pasta or rice. You should have four servings per day. The milk group includes fluid milk, cottage cheese, yogurt, other cheesVsand ice cream. You need two servings every day. The fruits and vegetables group should be represented by four servings of raw or cooked vegetables, fruits and-or juices. The meat group can be represented by two servings of meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dried beans or peas or peanut butter. That sounds like a lot of food to prepare for one person every day, but the portions can be small. If you think it’s not worthwhile to go to all that trouble, you’re mistaken. It is worthwhile but you don’t have to do it every day. With a little thought, you can handle the cooking quite easily and well. If you don’t like to cook or if you have other things you’d rather do most of the time, use you refrigerator freezer and your microwave oven to help you to eat well with a minimum of effort. Set aside a day ever week or two and cook quantities of food. When your dishes are cooked and cooled, divide them into mealsize portions.wrap carefully, label and freeze them for later use. A thawed and warmed portion of beef stew, for instance, can be supplemented by a thawed and warmed bran muffin, a small tossed salad, a beverage and some kind of seasonal fruit for dessert.

Spas, Clubs Offer Fitness Programs Having a place to relax and release tensions is almost a necessity with the pressures and anxieties of contemporary living. It’s no surprise then, that an increasing number of individuals consider health spas the ideal retreat and exercise centers. Many find their combination of health programs and facilities a fine physical-improvement value. Beginning health club members can expect to concentrate ‘on primary conditioning during the first months of the program. Goal-setting is established and a record kept of measurements, advancements, and attendance. Restraint is emphasized, as it is common for new members to overdo - activity causing fatigue, and occasional injury. Soon the program becomes an advanced, personalized routine. Through planning, regular exercise, and enthusiastic application, members eventually complete more demanding tasks. Early programs require individuals to spend approximately two to three hours weekly of spa time. As plans progress, the time requirement decreases while results accelerate. When goals are reached, a maintenance plan is developed to keep physically fit and active. You'll want to select a club which contains all, or some, of the most popular features. Large rooms are ideal for yoga and exercise programs. A running track or jogging trail will make these activities easier to perform. A sauna or steam room is a near-must for those on reducing programs. Special attractions often include masseurs, whirlpool baths, and ultraviolet rooms for out-of-summer tanning. In choosing a spa, make sure the locker rooiji is comfortable and clean. Ideally each member should, have a permanent locker for storing personal articles. If you’re on a tight budget, most health clubs offer low, weekly or monthly payment plans and nearly all accept major credit cards. Whether your interests are exercise, weight reduction, nutrition or relaxation, health spas offer the programs and facilities enabling you to reach your goals easily and enjoy ably.
