A week of 4-H Community judging was recently completed for Elkhart County 4 H’ers enrolled in Foods, Home Furnishings. Clothing and Food Preservation projects. According to Carol Deer. New president presides for Wowakeechies New club president Mildred Denzel presided for the July 26 meeting of the Wawakeechie Homemaker’s Club which was held at the Turkey Creek Conservation Club, Syracuse. Hostesses for the luncheon were Ruth Banta and Rachelle Rarick The citizenship report included discussion on new post office and it’s service. The next meeting at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 16, will also be at the clubhouse and hostesses will be Hattie Byers and Edith Esclas. Syracuse High class of 1968 invited to reunion Members of Syracuse High School Class of 1968, as well-as those who were members of the class but did not graduate, are invited to attend the first reunion of the class on August 5. The event will be held at the South Shore Country Club dining room, with the cocktail hour from 6 to 7 p.m. and dinner hour, 7 to 8 p.m. The class of 1968 was the last for the old Syracuse High School, replaced by Wawasee High School. Those planning to attend are urged to contact Nancy Shields, 701 S. Huntington St., Syracuse, chairman of the reunion committee. Mrs. Larry Heckaman honored at shower Mrs. Larry Heckaman, who lives on Phoenix Island, r 1 box 50 Syracuse, was honored with a baby shower on Saturday, July 22, given by her two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Gene Heckaman and Mrs. Larry Swank of Syracuse. The event was a 10 a.m. brunch in the “farmhouse” of Mrs. Heckaman, 1061 Parkwood Dr., Nappanee. Mrs. Heckaman’s daughter, Kami, assisted the hostesses. Teddy bear decorations and a special molded salad formed the decor on the serving and gift table. A total of 29 guests came from Nappanee, Syracuse and Warsaw. Two special guests were Mrs. Larry Heckaman’s mother, Mrs. Barbara Scantlin of Northville, Mich., and her mother-in-law, Mrs. Ivo Heckaman of Syracuse. As a special feature, each guest wrote down their guesses for the date of the birth, the weight, time, and suggested names. Mr. and Mrs. Heckaman are expecting their first child September 27. MJ VANDALS DAMAGE HOME The side of the Robert Beard residence, E. Shore Dr., Syracuse, was damaged by vandals, it was reported Friday, July 21, to Kosciusko County police. The side of the cottage, located on the east side of Syracuse Lake, was chipped and a sign was stolen. Damage to the house was set at $lO.

1 YEAR AGO, AUG. 3.1977 Special awards given as memorials to deceased members of the Syracuse-Wawasee Garden Club, were presented to three women at the club’s placement flower show Thursday. They were Mrs. R. C. Tytler, Mrs. Ralph Clingaman and Mrs. Helen Harper. David E. Petz from North Liberty is the new manager and owner of the Syracuse Dairy Queen. A public hearing has been set for 10 a m. Aug. 10 by the state tax board on the remonstrance filed against the physical education facility for Wawasee High School two weeks ago. Gamma Sigma Sorority will be holding the Cystic Fibrosis SwimAlong this coming Saturday. Aug. 6 at the Wawasee Prep location on Lake Wawasee. Steve Hoopingarner, 19, r 1 box 400, Syracuse, ended his 10-year involvement in the 4-H program this week after he received his tenure award Monday at the Kosciusko County Fair. 5 YEARS AGO. AUG. 1.1973 Ray and Lou Ann Yoder, owners and operators of the Frog Tavern south of Syracuse, have purchased the property known as The Guide on the east side of Lake Wawasee and will operate it as the Frog Annex. The shining star of the Seventh Annual North-South All-Star football game held Saturday on the Bloomington campus was Kim Cripe, Wawasee High. School graduate. He led the North team to a 16-14 victory over the South team and was named “Most valuable player” by attending sportswriters. / Earl J. Darr, 72, ofllß W. E. Long Dr., died July 31 in the Goshen hospital of a sudden heart attack. He was a retired farmer active in community affairs. Ken Jordan, first assistant football coach at Wawasee High School turned in his resignation Monday morning to accept a post as head football coach at Winchester, Ind. He and Mrs. Jordan live at 725 Front St. in Syracuse. Three persons were injured in an inboard boat fire on Lake Wawasee July 25. David Scheidt, 30, Lake Wawasee; his sister, Mrs. Thomas Westman, Northridge, Calif.; and her threeyear old son, Kurt, were thrown into the water after an explosion occurred when the engine was started. 10 YEARS AGO, JULY 31,1968 Miss Judith Lynne Ridings of Syracuse and Specialist 4 Kenneth E. Wagner were united in marriage recently in the Artillery Boat chapel at Lawton, Okla. Her Mr. and Mrs. Jackson D. Ridings, Sr. of Syracuse. Syracuse Police chief Daniel W. Ganger, 313 N. Indiana Ave., Goshen, has submitted his resignation to the Syracuse Town Board. Chief for four years. Ganger has accepted a position in private business. The board of trustees of the Purse stolen at Columbia City grocery store Columbia City police investigated a case 6f purse snatching involving a Syracuse woman last week. Authorities reported Mrs. Dan Courtney had just left a grocery on North Main in Columbia City early on Tuesday when someone dashed by and grabbed her purse. The purse contained no money.

Lakeland Community School has appointed William Dorsey to the post of principal for the Syracuse Junior high school for the 1968-69 school year. JULY 31. 1958 Mrs. Lee Fischer announced recently she will open a woman s apparel shop Saturday, Aug. 9. in Wawasee Village, to be known as Margie’s Village Shop. The new store is located in the former Etter Real Estate office. Harry H. Reuschel of Goshen completed negotiations this week for the purchase of the Dixie Restaurant from Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bates Miss Dian Alfrey as “Miss Syracuse” competes with 15 girls representing all towns in the county for the title ( of 1958 Kosciusko County Queert. Burt Albert Francis, 96, died at his home in Syracuse Tuesday evening. His widow, the former Lulu Seiders, survives, with a brother.
