Marriage is commitment to God
With the two words, "I do," a man and a woman become united in marriage. Even though the ceremony uniting a couple is short, the commitment made can have far reaching effects. Rev. Phil Frew, pastor of Saint Andrew's United Methodist Church in Syracuse, feels the institution of marriage is. changing, but is one that is still sought by most couples. He said even those desiring to "live together" often eventually take their wedding vows. He commented, "The whole changing role of women has made marriage like a dinosaur of the past. Today, the wife is in the same place as the man. It's a marriage of equals." He attributes these changes as part of the growing divorce rate between young couples. "It's rare to find a couple who go into the why of marriage, what it means. It's not surprising we have a high divorce rate." Some other things which have helped to change the traditional views of marriage, said Frew, are birth control, women's rights and the busy schedule of the husband, wife and children. The church still believes in the sanctity of marriage, commented the pastor, and strives to keep couples together. Frew said, "Only the church stands to pull people together. We support the entire family." Programs are held in the church to help couples in need and to teach young people how to handle a marriage. Frew said, "One of the things we say to a young couple when they come in is the only way you can

take vows in marriage is for keeps. If a couple is not willing to make that type of commitment, chances are small that the marriage will work." He added, "Vows are not taken to each other. They're taken to God." Often he finds couples want God to bless the wedding and not the marriage. This he feels is a bad situation. "As far as the church is concerned, a good marriage is not one that lasts 50 plus years. We believe Christ makes the difference in a relationship in the quality, the strength and the joy of the relationship. In the changing passages of life." He also stressed that marriage is between two families and sets of friends and not just two people. "Everyone should work together to strengthen a couple's marriage." Last September, a law went into effect where county clerks could unite couples in marriage. Even with this ruling, Frew still feels couples seek the church in their time of joining. He said, "The church adds a dimension that the county clerk can't. The Christian concept." He concluded by saying, "Marriage is an adjunct to heaven. It's a means by which a couple can work by helpmates to an eternal life." County Clerk Speaks N. Jean Messmore, Kosciusko County Clerk, spoke on her views on marriage. She feels most of the couples who come to her to be joined are doing so for either the second or third time. "I feel that more second and third marriages, more of them are outside the church." She added, however, "I have had a few first
marr.iages." Even though some couples come to her instead of the church, she still feels the, ceremony should have some religious significance. Before she begins her ceremony, she always
