Otis R. Bowen Center developing varied programs

The Otis R. Bowen Center for Human Services, Inc. is making rapid progress in developing a variety of new programs to serve the residents of Huntington. Kosciusko, Whitley, Marshall and Wabash counties. Since the occupancy of the new facilities located in Warsaw, the center staff has been involved in a flurry of program activity. Specifically, the outpatient and consultation programs are in the process of expansion- The outpatient program, in particular, has experienced a 15 per cent increase in service since the new facility was completed in March of this year. Several new programs are already in operation. The inpatient program began on March 14, and provides space for 18 individuals who need around-the-clock psychiatric care on a shortterm basis. Since the implementation of the inpatient program, the 18 bed unit has experienced a 62 per cent occupancy rate. This rate is 12 per cent higher than the projected rate for the first six months of operation. The partial care program is in full swing and was designed to provide intensive therapeutic activities on a daily basis. Participants are involved in individual and group therapy, recreational, occupational and art therapy to encourage them to socially interact with both the staff and other patients. Activities are provided on a regularly scheduled basis and an attempt is made to provide individualized care. The center also provides a 24hour emergency service. An inWATS line provides access to emergency service personnel around the clock. The special emergency number is 1-800-342-5652. Center personnel have

handled a number of emergency situations, such as suicidal threats, acute psychotic episodes, etc. since the emergency service was established approximately three months ago. A substance abuse program is also rapidly developing. An employee assistance program for alcoholics in industry is now in the process of being presented to interested firms. In addition, an alcoholism educational program has been offered in selected areas for individuals who have been in contact with the court system. The center is also specially prepared to provide professional assistance to rape victims. Efforts have been made to inform local police officials and judges of the availability of counseling and consultation for rape victims and their families. Workshops and seminars are in the planning stages as it is recognized that public knowledge in this area is quite limited. In the near future, the center’s child and adolescent services will be expanded by hiring additional professionals to work intensively with children and families. The program will be equipped to provide a complete psychiatric, social and psychological evaluation of children and individual family members if necessary. The center’s facilities include special rooms for individual and group activity play therapy, group therapy, recreational activities and multipurpose areas. Within the next 18 months the Bowen Center staff will also be devising and implementing program for court screening, after-care follow-up services, expanded consultation and education services, services for the elderly and a transitional half-way house program.
