Picnic safety Summer time is here and it is picnic time. It seems like the country is calling for us to escape to grassy fields, whether it is a cozy two-some or the whole family. Picnics are great, but we need to do some planning and be organized. Picnics need to be organized so that everyone has a good time and everyone shares in the work. It is a good idea to keep basics together in the basket. This way the consumer does not have to empty the cupboards every time picnic supplies are needed. Some picnic basics are: salt, pepper, sharp slicing knife, can opener, spoons, forks, paper cups, plates, napkins, towels, matches and long handled fork. The most important part of a picnic is to keep food safe. Lack of sanitation, insufficient cooking and improper storage can allow bacteria in food • to increase to dangerous levels. Remember at room temperature bacteria multiplies rapidly. Many foods don’t show spoilage; therefore you can’t rely entirely on taste, odor, or appearance to determine whether or not the food will cause illness. • . Keep this general rule in mind to insure safe picnics, keep cold foods cold and keep hot foods hot. Consumers should remember that life begins at 45 degrees F in caring for foods z requiring ' refrigeration. First they should insist that products are being properly refrigerated. Food requiring refrigeration should not be allowed to remain in a warm car or set out on a table. Two hours at 70 degrees F is comparable to several days at 32 degrees F. If you need to have ice, save money by making your own. Just simply freeze water in empty margarine tubs, the ice pops right out. When planning your picnic try not to take egg based foods on a picnic such as custards, cream . desserts and anything made with ’ mayonnaise. These are all foods I that can cause trouble unless I properly refrigerated. If unI cooked meat, fish and poultry are I taken along to be grilled keep them super cold and grill until thoroughly done. Most of all remember to have a good picnic by having a plan, everyone sharing in the work, this means clean up too and most of all keep the food safe. A
