SUMMER

Jogging helps ease tension

What started out as a form of exercise a few yeprs ago has grown to almost a national past ' time. Many people are taking to the byways and streets to prove that jogging is not only good exercise, it can also’provide good therapy to ease tension. Doctor John H. Griest of the University of Wisconsjln has stated that jogging is the newest treatment for depression. On the average, he says, he recommends a 30 to 45 minute runningwalking session three times a week for the depressed person. He says jogging provides, “An experience of mastery. People become physically distracted from the many nagging body complaints typical of depressed patients.” Dr., Griest also feels that jogging as therapy is as great or greater \ than other forms of therapy used. Another doctor who agrees with Dr. Griest about the benefits of jogging is Dr. Robert Israel, r orthopedist and chief of sports medicine at New York’s Hospital for Joint Diseases. He says, “I think it is great, psychologically and physically. It keeps me in shape. It’s inexpensive. It’s easy to do.” Dr. Israel, who often treats jogging injuries, has a few pointers for a person who wants to start running. They are as follows: Pick the right kind of running shoe. He suggests looking for three things: cushioning, flexibility and support, particularly for the arches. Start stretching exercises before jogging. Israel says only a> few minutes are necessary to stretch the muscles to better receive the shock of running. Warm up slowly. He recommends eight to 10 minutes of light jogging at first to increase the body’s ability to adapt to the

exercise. Too often, he says, runners try to achieve a full' running pace when they start or try to run too fast too soon. Some also run when fatigued. He says, “Take it easy. Allow the muscles to stretch some more and then increase your running gradually.” . Style. Several styles of jogging have been suggested, the most popular being “heel, side of the foot and off on the toe.” Israel said whatever one is used to, one ; thing to remember is muscle control. “Instead of-jamming the; foot down, put it down. So many people run very flat footed, when they’re tired. Running 7 straight-legged is at least as bad and usually results in a flat-footed stride. Coming down wjth the bent is best.” He continued to say about style, back can avoid back trouble.” He also recommends that the runner’s alignment of his body should be a “straight forward pace.” He added women should not run braless. Runner’s Opinions Several runners competing in The Mail-Journal Fun Run Monday night, gave their opinions on why they like to run. Fred Myers, 214 Wabash Avenue, Wakarusa, agrees with the doctors in saying running helps to relax him. He said, “I like the challenge, the relaxation, the satisfaction I get out of it.” Myers also commented, “I personally use it as a mental test. I pick out a point in front of me and set a site and shoot for it.” Tom Lower, 819 S. 12th Street, Goshen, who won first place in the 3.2 mile race, said he likes to run because it keeps him in shape. He said, “I guess I like the competitive aspect. I know it’s going to help me in later life physically.”

Running is fun Running turned out to be a fun experience at Monday night’s first annual Mail-Journal Fun Run. Above, it’s “on your mark, get set and/o!” as runners begin their long jog. At the bottom, left, some fatigue can be seen as runners try to muster enough stamina to finish the race. And, below, right, Arch Baumgartner, publisher of The Mail-Journal, shows he’s still in good form as he nears the finishing line.
