Look out Boston Marathon, the first annual Flotilla Fun Run is cornin’! _____ At this point, the Fun Run is only a gleam in its promoters’ eye, and no real threat to the now-famous 26-mile Boston Marathon, but hopes are that it will catch on and be a welcomed addition to the annual Lake Wawasee Flotilla. The Fourth of July celebration will be studded with such events as a Flotilla Ball on Saturday night, fireworks at the south end of Lake Wawasee and at the Syracuse city park. The Fun Run should be one more added attraction. Time: 6:30 P.M. Monday The Fun Run is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 3, at Syracuse city park, runners taking part in two events. The short run — 3.2 miles — will begin at city park and go around Maxwelton golf course and return to the city park, byway of North Shore Drive. The long run — 7.8 miles will make the above run, then continue around Syracuse Lake byway of a route outlined in the accompanying map. Runners in this event will begin about 10 minutes before the second runners step off. There will be trophies in five categories of each run. Each runner will be given a number and will be clocked so he will know how long it took him to make the full run. A $1 entry fee will be charged, $4 if the runner wants a T-shirt; emblazoned with Flotilla Fun Run. Lots Os Help The event is being sponsored by The Mail-Journal and is hoped to attract runners from the Lakeland community and from miles around. Such runs have become a big attraction and have become a part of city-wide promotions in numerous towns. The Flotilla Fun Run will have plenty of help to see it off successfully. For instance, Wawasee High School principal Henry Smith, a runner himself, is expected to command the microphone to get the event started, then be a competing runner. Also from the school are athletic director Carl Meditch and track and cross country coach Jerry Minton. WHS track star Lorene Spearman will be the official starter, but it is not known if she will be a participant or not. Syracuse city police and county sheriff’s deputies will assist in controlling traffic, and local Civil Defense members, under director Tom Gilbert, will be on hand with their Walkie-Talkie radios to control traffic. The EMS ambulance will stand by for an emergency, if it is needed. Also on this page is an entry blank runners are asked to fill out. Other than that, entry can be made at the city park from 5 p;m. Monday until the time of the race. With that, we can only say “Good Running, Folks! ”
