Upon his retiring Rev. Jones said, “I’ve had a wonderful experience. Just wonderful. It’s been satisfying in so many ways.” The First Church is the largest Protestant parish in Wethersfield, a suburb of Hartford. Rev. Jones’ retirement is said by the Wethersfield Post (June 9 issue) to have ended “one of the most productive periods in First Church of Christ history.” The church had a membership of 1,100 members when Jones began his ministry in 1943. Today its membership is at the 1,700 mark. Author Thomas

She is now congregation president. Jones saw a complete restoration of the church and construction of additions, as well as several other major building projects. The church’s meeting house, built in the 1760 s has also been restored. In the Post article Rev. Jones states, “Many of the times I most remember

have come in connection with our building program. The renovation of our meeting house was certainly a special moment. And the interesting historical work that went into that. Our coming back into the meeting house, dur service and the rededication in 1973 was probably the high point.” Jones has noted several changes in the church community over the past 35 years. When he first went to First Church it was an old, semi-rural parish with the congregation being a mix of farmers and insurance workers. Today most of the farmers are gone. “More and more the mission of the church is seen as not only applying to faraway areas but to the Hartford area as well,” Jones was quoted as saying in the Hartford Courant. First Church, under Jones’ leadership, has initiated a scholarship program for disadvantaged city youths and constructed a low-income housing project for the elderly in Wethersfield. The church also operates a nursery in one of its buildings for working mothers in the community. These programs are not intended to serve members of the congregation and are used primarily by other persons. The scholarship program awards grants to 12 to 15 Hartford students each year. The housing project makes 75 units available to elderly persons who meet income guidelines. The project was completed in 1977 at a cost of $1.7 million. Retirement Plans As for his retirement

plans, Jones says, “I’m not making any firm commitments until I find out how much time we’ll be here in Wethersfield. I will continue to be a part of the life of this community, but in what ways, I’m not sure right now.” He was quick to admit that he’ll miss the role of senior minister that he’s held for a good portion of his life. But at the same time he’s looking forward to retirement. “I felt we’d come to a time in the life of the church when it was right to retire. We’ve been planning it for nearly two years.” He pointed out to the Post reporter that he’s not retiring to ‘begin enjoying

He is an avid photographer and enjoys a good talk about art. He’s been asked to put on a one man show at the Visitor’s Center next year, 11 something that he’s very excited about. Jones also plans to do some volunteer work for the church. Jones was honored by his parishioners prior to his retirement when the church bestowed the honor of “Minister Emeritus” upon him.
