Gymnasts recognized
Members of the Wawasee High School gymnastics team were recognized for their achievements,including finishing third in the state, during a program Monday night attended by parents and school officials. Three top achievement awards were presented to members of the team. Taking top awards were Tracy Rinker, sophomore member of the optional team and former state all-round gymnast, most valuable player; Jenny Boyer, who scored 98 points, beginning compulsory award; and Kelli Price, intermediate award. High point award went to all members of the optional team. Outstanding achievement awards from the Indiana State Athletic Association were presented to members of the optional team following their participation in the state meet. The team and coach, Mrs. Marcia Carpenter, presented the third place trophy from state competition to principal Henry Smith. Wawasee finished third behind the Central team by .475 points. “She has been ‘the coach' for Wawasee High School, ” Smith commented on coach Carpenter. He praised the coach and efforts of the team and their conduct. Coach Carpenter commented on the “marathon” season her team finished. She thanked the parents and public for their support at the state meet. "There was a lot of competition there,” the coach reflected. “There was a lot of pressure there.” Optional team members recognized were Nancy Amos, 84.70 points, junior; Heather Beer, sixth all-round state gymnast, freshman; Kelli Price, vaulter, junior; Tracy Rinker, second all-round state gymnast, 192.95 season points, 106.15 state points, sophomore; and Kathie Yoder, 68.30 points, vaulter, uneven parallel bars, junior Members of the intermediate compulsory team who were recognized were Boody Brewer, sophomore; Rose Easley, sophomore; Esther Morris, freshman; and Michelle White, sophomore. All intermediate members were absent, as they were playing a tennis match against Warsaw. Beginning compulsory gymnasts honored were Amy Bales, freshman; Stephanie Baumgartner, sophomore; Jenny Boyer, senior; Tonda Davis, freshman; Rhonda Hickman, senior; Judy Knudsen, junior. Sandy Lozano, freshman; Danielle Neibert, sophomore; and Amy Reed, freshman.

'rhe final score was 0-7 in Warsaw's favor. In individual matches it was Janea Charpas, Warsaw, over Kathy Brouwer of W’awasee. 0-6, 1- Warsaw’s Becky Hayes bested Deb Dieterly of Wawasee, 2- 2-6. A closer match was Tracy Blue and Kelli Price, 4-6, 57. Julie Mont leth defeated Darsee Staley, 3-6, 3-6. And Marryn Robinson defeated Julie Haffner. 2-6,1-6. The team of Chanda Kline and Sue Strinhausen bested the team of Teresa Carpenter and Nancy Amos. 0-6, 4-6. Nancy Delp and Brooke Zykon took Susie Silveus and Jan Miller, 0-6,1-6.
