Students vote for book award

Students at Miltord, North Webster and Syracuse Junior High Schools have voted "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever," by Barbara Robinson, as their first choice for the Young Hoosier Book Award for 1978. "The Dark Didn't Catch Me," an autobiographical novel about "the depression, by Crystal a new Hoosier author from Fort Wayne, captured second place. In third place was “Stout-hearted Seven.” describing the Sager family's tragic trek westward to Oregon, by Neta Frazier. One hundred eighty-seven Lakeland students voted in this fourth annual event, sponsored by the Indiana School Librarians Association. To be eligible to vote a student must be in grades foureight and must read or have heard three or piore books from the list of 20 nominated bixiks for that year. At Milford 118 students participated with 57 voting, at North Webster 87 participated with 69 voting, and Syracuse 61 voted out of 91 participating. A total of 296 students participated. Students who read the most books at Syracuse were June Brown 18; Gwen Williams 17; Gayle Napier and Lori Vinson 14; Jana James and Jackie Hemminger 13. At Milford Melissa Baumgartner and Karen Haney

Historical fiction, fantasy, science fiction, sports, animal stories, humor, mystery, horse story, social values, boys' and girls' stories represent the various categories of interest. More than 6,000 students throughout Indiana voted last year.
