Netters trying to find winning combinations

It’s still experiment time for coach (’indy Peterson and her Wawasee High’ School Warriorette tennis team. With bad weather keeping the team practicing in the Syracuse School gym these past tew weeks on drills only, she’s shuffling her squad members around until the player-position combinations click. Just two seniors are left on the Warrior squad after the exit last year of four players — including the number one player — Dawn Price. The current line up has Teresa Carpenter playing the first position, followed by Kathy Brouwer, Deb Dieterly, Jane Haffner, Alice Steffen and Darsee Stahley. Steffen has been teamed with Nancy Amos to form one doubles team, while newcomers Jan Miller and Brenda Hunter have been paired as another team. Hunter, a freshman, often is paired with Susan Naab, another freshman for varsity doubles play. “They have a lot of potential,” coach Peterson says. The number one player, Carpenter, is a good, performer. "If she gets her first serve in they can’t return it," the coach explained. In play Monday, Carpenter broke a string on a one and one-half week old, new, Prince racket with a "sweet spot” demonstrating that ability to a Central Noble opponent. All her matches thus far have been close ones.

QUICK LESSON -Coach Cindy Peterson, left, gives a quick lesson on the proper grip to Nancy Amos and Teresa Carpenter, members of the Wawasee tennis team.

"They’re going to be strong at their positions,” Peterson says of Dieterly and Brouwer. And a very agressive Haffner, only a sophomore, is coming on strong. "She’s going to be a good player,” her coach estimates.

Stahley gets the nomination for most improved player. She played on the junior varsity squad last spring and is now firmly entrenched on the varsity. A summer of practice and effort made the difference, her coach

related. Another hard-working player is Steffen. “Alice is going to be a good all-round player,’’ her coach predicts. Nancy Amos, returning letterearner, played her first match Monday. Her development depends on improvement in future outings Peterson said. Boody Brewer and Marge Pittman are serving as managers. The team may not have had much court time before the season, but a schedule of three weekly matches is preparing them for peak improvement by sectional time. With the rainy weather, one match with Warsaw, was rained out and has been rescheduled for May 1. Following Monday’s match, the Warriorettes stand at 1-3 this season after a 5-5 finish last year. Coach Peterson has determined Bremen and Rochester to be the two Northern Lakes Conference toughies. Both teams have beaten all of the other conference teams they have played thus far. “There’s no way you’re going to beat Elkhart,” Peterson said. She explained their teams practice year-round and it shows.

"It was quite a job,” coach Rudy Cesco of Wawasee reflected on the first invitational hosted by the school. He was very glad the team did host the other teams and it gave them exposure to the other teams and their play. “We’re going to have it again next year,” the coach added.
