Gymnasts capture first regional to make state crown bid

Wawasee’s girls’ gymnastics team captured their first regional title this last week end, after getting nudged out last year. Arid the team is considered by some to be the favorite to grab the state title. Meanwhile, back at Wawasee. it’s business as usual. "We’re just practicing every night.” says coach Marcia Carpenter. “And we’re'going to try and do it.” This Saturday, the whole team will journey to Perry Meridian High School, Indianapolis, to make their state bid. They missed out on last year’s state by one-tenth of a point and this time used the performance of defending state champion Tracy Rinker to their advantage. Wawasee compiled 90.1 points, followed by Portage, with 89.7 and Merrillville with 88.9 Rinker scored a 9.0 from the judges for her uneven parallel • bar routine. She compiled 35.25 to win the four individual events and all-round title, just short of her 36.05 lifetime best. Rinker’s scores in other events were 8.9, vaulting; 8.45, balance beam; and 8.9, floor exercise. ; Heather Beer, placed third in the balance beam, with a 7.45 score. She also placed eighth in floor exercise but missed placing in the vault by a 7.9 fourth finish. Kathie Yoder tallied a 7.8 score in the uneven parallel bars. Also adding to the total team score were Nancy Amos, ninth, 7.6, floor exercise and Kelli Price,

Most of the team members f are underclassmen and this should help bring another successful year in wrestling to Waw asee High School.

Columbia City edges out Warrior batmen 4-3

Columbia City edged out the Wawasee Warrior baseball squad 4-3 last Friday. Bad breaks characterized the contest such as walks and errors, which resulted in a 0-2 record for the Warriors. Six other runners were left on base during innings second, fourth and fifth, when the Warriors scored single runs. Two errors by first baseman Gary Vance —a passed ball and two wild pitches, a walk, a single and double - led to the Eagles markers all making it in. Kent Trobaugh scored when Jeff Beezley rounded to first base, in the second inning, with Wawasee taking a 1-0 lead.

Wawasee’s track team is working through a rebuilding program. But the season thus far has had some good moments, with coach Jerry Minton discovering the talents of some of his youthful participants. Dan Andrews has vaulted over 12 feet already and has been running the 330 hurdles. With the best discus in the area, Andy Woilman has tossed it 162 feet, seven inches and can hurl the shot 45 feet. Mike Ousley has pushed himself six feet, two inches over the high jump and has been working out in the 220 event. Kevin Gilbert has sprinted 4:34 in the 1600-meter, 9:56 in 3206meter and has run a flat 10 in the two mile, or can do a 2:06 for a half-mile. “Those two times are as good as anybody in the area.” says the coach. Two young sprinters - Shad Hunter and Oscar Hernandez - are running for the varsity. Andy Brown is doing a good job in the 330 hurdles, mile relay and high hurdles. H.l A",t "• “1 1. Linksmen bring record to I * I

Wawasee’s golfers scored a win in their second match of the season Friday, bringing their record to 1-1. Central Noble scored 382. while the Warrior linksmen tallied up 316 on the 18hole course at South Shore. The four varsity spots are filled by Jim Hoover, Rob Smith, Rick McKibben and Mark Walgamuth. Players vying for the fifth spot on the Warrior team are Bill Hays, Greg Carpenter and Doug VanLue. Rob Smith, lead man for the Warriors, was low man against Elkhart, but got sick on the last part of the course and brought in an 82, after a one-over 37 on the front.

Youth Center events

Two new programs are starting this week at the youth center. Beginning April 20, at 10 a.m. for six weeks, a Claris being offered for women who would like to learn the basics of golf and who have never played the game before Robert Carlson will instruct the class. The Wawasee girls tennis team defeated North Wood by a score of 4-3, Tuesday, April 18.
