Know how to tell when car’s steering system needs attention? You should!
When the red light or gauge on your dashboard warns of low oil pressure, there’s generally time to do something about it. But when you get warnings of something amiss in your steering system, it could be a sign that potentially dangerous and expensive repair damage has already been done. Tips on night-time driving Most people in the United States do not drive as much after dark as during the day —only 28 percent of vehicle miles are driven between sun down and sun-up. But more than one-half of all fatal auto accidents (57 percent) take place after dark. So, the driver must be especially careful at night. Here are some safety tips for you: 1. Most after-dark fatal accidents occur on 2-lane highways, which for the most part are unlit, rural areas. Use high-beam headlights, when there are no vehicles approaching, so that you can anticipate curves. High speed on curves in which the driver is unfamiliar can be especially dangerous. 2. The cardinal rule of after-dark driving is: YOU MUST BE ABLE TO STOP WITHIN THE DISTANCE YOU CAN SEE AHEAD. When it is dark and there is rain or sleet or snow or fog, this rule is especially applicable. Keep headlights clean to maximize visibility in good weather as well as bad. 3. Night-time driving puts special stress on eye muscles. Do what you can to reduce glare. Keeping the windows clean inside and out, is a simple but important remedy. If you find your eyes getting tired and feel drowsy, pull over onto a safe spot. Many drivers find that a half hour “cat nap” permits them to ease eye fatigue at night. 4. Since it can be easier to tire while driving at night as compared to the daytime, stop at least every two hours. Most people need not be reminded about not drinking alcoholic beverages and driving. What many people do not realize, however, is that it is possible to drink too much coffee. Initially, coffee may help keep drivers awake, but drinking too much of it can have a depressant effect, cutting down on driver alertness. 5. If your vehicle breaks down on an unlit highway, try to move it to the side of the road, leaving the lights on. Once the car is on the shoulder, make sure that the license plates, front and rear, are clean and unobstructed. Light reflected from your plates could save your life in case of a breakdown on dark roads by indicating the presence of a stalled or disabled vehicle.
