Use special woods for privacy
WEST LAFAYETTE - It’s not too early to begin planning for those summer outdoor activities and yard parties. But privacy for these is sometimes hard to achieve, since most residential houses are built on relatively small lots. Addition of a “natural material’’ such as that used in a wooden yard fence or deck can help solve this problem while adding to the overall appearance and value of your property, says Daniel Cassens, Purdue University extension forest products specialist. “Wood is an exceedingly variable material,” Cassens points out. “As a result, you must understand some of the basic characteristics and compare prices for maximum satisfaction.” “The major problem with most wood used in exterior situations is decay,” he continues. “In the manufacturing process, most lumber is dried and dry lumber does not decay. However, as soon as this lumber is put in contact with the soil or exposed to the weather for prolonged periods, it will begin to absorb moisture. Then decay will set in. At first, wood decay may progress slowly, but eventually it can completely destroy your project.” Fortunately, some wood does not decay. The heartwood of cedar and redwood is naturally resistant to decay and, as a result, is often used for fences, decks and other situations where

decay is likely. Heartwood is the darker central core of a tree, while sapwood is the light-colored outer band, the specialist explains. Sapwood has no resistance to decay. Because the durability of even redwood and cedar varies greatly, and because these woods are in short supply and often contain some non-durable sapwood, lumber treated with a preservative is also a good choice for the homeowner. Treated lumber is most often a nondurable wood such as the sapwood of pine which has been pressure treated with a preservative to prevent decay. Creosote is an old-time preservative; but due to its odor and color, it is not suitable for home use. Today, inorganic salts are also used to treat lumber against decay and insect attack. This lumber is usually referred to by trade names such as Wolmanized or Osmose-treated and is available at many retail lumber yards. Other trade names are Chemonite, Boliden, Erdalith, Langwood. Greensalt, and Celcure. Any wood treated with these chemicals in accordance with American Wood Preservers Association (AWPA) standards is acceptable for above-ground uses such as decks and fence boards. If the lumber is to be used in soil contact, such as fence posts or other high hazard areas, it must be treated with larger quantities of the chemicals. Wood

treated with the inorganic salts is odorless, and is usually light green or brown in color. The dry wood can be painted or stained like standard lumber. Most members of the wood preserving industry assure a quality product by voluntarily subscribing to the AWPA. The AWPA, in conjunction with the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory and the Federal Housing Administration, has issued quality control standards for pressuretreated lumber and plywood. Products treated by these specified standards are labeled with the AWPA quality mark. This mark will appear on every piece of wood treated, in accordance with the standards, by a member company. A typical mark will show the trade name of the chemical used, such as Wolmanized. Usually below that will be the initials AWPA and then additional letters and numbers such as LP2 or LP22. The LP2 indicates the wood is treated only with enough chemical for above ground use. If it is marked LP22, the material is suitable for fence posts or other high hazard uses. To prevent rust stain and corrosion, galvanized nails or nails of nonferrous metals should be used when naturally durable wood or preservative-treated wood is being used. Remember, to get the maximum value for your dollar, compare costs of different materials and deal with knowledgeable suppliers. Also, tell them how you intend to use the product.

Noncy Wilson accepted for IU residency Nancy M. Wilson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold E. Cromwell man injured Friday Robert A Tierney, 18, r 1 Cromwell, received a neck injury in a 8:26 p.m. accident Friday, April 14, on Main Street, north of Clinton Street, in Goshen. Tierney, who was not hospitalized, was struck from the rear by Julie A. Dooley, 18, New Paris. Dooley was cited for following too closely. Damage was set at $550. VANDALISM Vandalism was reported at the residence of Andrew Terhune, Stoner’s Park, North Webster, to county police recently. A window of the front storm window had been broken and several screens were damaged. Nothing was missing.
