1 YEAR AGO, APRIL 20,1977 Mrs. Peggy Coy of Syracuse and Mr. and Mrs. Dean Schwalm of Goshen are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter and son, Colleen Coy and Wynn Schwalm. The Pilcher team at Pilcher s Shoe Store, Syracuse, is celebrating 30 years in business this week. Team members are owners Doug and Goldie Pilcher, Steve Butt, Opal Keim and Kirk Rockenbaugh. Saturday night was Charter night for the newly organized Kiwanis Club of Wawasee, and formal acceptance of the new 40member service club was held at the South Shore Club. A record setting temperature was set in Syracuse on Monday. High temperatures got up to 84, beating the old record of 83. 5 YEARS AGO, APRIL 19,1973 . A dedication of the Bishop Gray Memorial Window was held during Palm Sunday Services at the All Saint’s Episcopal Church on Lake Wawasee, with Rt. Rev. William C. R. Sheridan, Bishop, I and Rev. David L. Hyndman, Vicar, participating. The board of school trustees of the Lakeland community schools has appointed Hal Traviolia to the position of varsity football coach and Kenneth Jordan to the position of varsity wrestling coach at Waw,asee high school. Wawasee high school’s Future Teachers of America organization won top honors at the state convention in Indianapolis last week end. Young Craig Koble, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Koble of Syracuse, captured the county spelling bee Saturday at Warsaw after 15 minutes of spelling. 10 YEARS AGO, APRIL 17,1968 Lydia Tucker and Jan Lawson have been named grand prize winners in the Mail-Journal-Syracuse, Milford merchant’s cosponsored Easter coloring contest. John Cripe, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Treadway of 304 Dolan Drive, Syracuse, is 16. He lives with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford D. Cripe, in Eau Gallie, Fla., and he is fast becoming a noted archeologist. Miss Linda Sue Denbo, daughter of Mrs. George Denbo of Syracuse and the late George Denbo, and G. A total of $2,000 damage was estimated in a building fire at Lakeland Laundry, Pickwick Road and SR 13S, in Syracuse, at 11:55 a m. April 16. Cause of the fire was an overheated dryer which caught the roof joists on fire. The fire was put out by 12:30 p.m. Owner is John Price. On April 14, a chimney fire and building fire were reported. The chimney blaze, at the Smith residence, Grandview Drive, owned by Chet Elder, was contained by the time firemen arrived at 2:38 p.m. They checked the house for damage and ventilated. No damage was reported and firemen returned to the station at 3:10 p.m The fire alarm at Augsburger’s Market, SR 13S, Syracuse, sounded at 4:37 p.m. The alarm malfunctioned; no fire was found when firemen arrived. They returned to the station at 5 p.m. Grass Fires Two grass fires were reported on April 15 and 16. At 1: 13 p.m. on April 15 firemen were called to the Robert Jones residence, CRIOSON, one-half mile east of the Syracuse-Milford Road. The cause of the fire was burning trash. No damage was reported and firemen returned to the' station at 2 p.m. At 1:43 p.m. on April 16 a grass fire was reported at the home of Becky McClure, North Shore Drive, lot 51, Syracuse. The fire was caused by a neighbor burning trash. No damage was estimated and firemen returned to the station at 2:05 p.m.

A suit for SIO,OOO damages for malicious prosecution has been filed in circuit court by Mrs. Lulu B. Cleland against Charles Rentfrow, town marshal, and the town of Syracuse. Tuesday was Rosemary Carr’s birthday, and because she has not been able to go to school for weeks, members of the second grade and Mrs. Meredith went to the Carr home to surprise her. Charles E. Olson of Indianapolis has rented the Sinclair cottage on the north side of the lake for the season. Greider booked at county jail Dennis Craig Greider, 21, North Webster, was booked in the county jail on a charge of criminal conversion concerning the theft of a license plate registered to Nancy A. Faust, r 1 Leesburg. Greider, who allegedly stole the plate while the Faust vehicle was parked at the Crystal Flash Service Station at North Webster, was released on his own recognizance.
