Old age gets older
Tilman R. Smith predicts that one effect of the new retirementage bill in the USA will be to force companies to more carefully review the productivity of all their workers — not just the older ones. Smith, who is director of programs and studies for the aging fbr Mennonite Board of Missions, Elkhart, said, “Some older people aren’t productive; some younger ones aren’t either.” He added, “It’s not a question of age, but a question of how well the person is doing the job.” President Carter is expected to sign into law a bill passed recently by Congress which raises to 70 the age at which employers can require workers to retire. One of the bill’s major benefits, Smith said, is that it provides “an alternative to idleness. One thing seniors do not want is a roleless role,” said the 75-year-old veteran educator, administrator and churchman. “We certainly recognize that some persons will be physically unable to handle their usual jobs as they get older,” Smith said. “Retirement careers are another part of the picture,” he added. Age 65 as a definition of old age has been an arbitrary line, he said. Retirement at 65, or pegging age 65 as the point of eligibility for various services to the elderly, was borrowed from the social legislation of Chancellor Otto von Bismark in Germany in the 1880 s, Smith said SIABAUMWS SHOP One Mile North, 4 Miles West Os Milford • Pick-Up Covers • Regular Tarps • Boat Covers ‘Fitted Tarps Or Any Kind Ot Cover Made To Order Also Weather Proofing And Repair Open 5 Days A Week 8 AM,-6P.M.

in a paper, “The Myths of the 65th Year.” Bismark, forced to provide some social benefits, set the age high enough so that few would live to reap any benefits. But times — and ages — have changed. From a mere 3.5 per cent of the U.S. population which reached 65 years of age almost 100 years ago, today the number has increased to 11 per cent, Smith said. In Canada the percentage is slightly lower. “One who is 65 today is a much different person from his counterpart in 1885, or even in 1935,” he said. The person over 65 in the USA and Canada is apt “to be more vigorous physically, somewhat better educated formally, and certainly more broadly educated informally through the media, travel, and intercultural contacts and opportunities,” Smith said. “Accordingly, he is more able to contribute from the standpoint of physical energy, accumulated understanding and wisdom, experience, mental acuity, and emotional perspective.” Smith does not expect the new bill to cause widespread changes in the working force, since already 64 per cent of people are retired by the time they are eligible for Social Security. The bill will not affect those who would ordinarily work beyond 65; it will not affect eligibility for Social Security benefits, and it will not directly affect blue-collar jobs, such as in the auto industry and fire and police forces where persons retire after 30 years on the job, or in the case of the military, after 20 years of service. careful to assess the potential of their older employees, providing perhaps part-time slots to take advantage of their specialties, Smith said. On the other hand, retirement careers will increase; and as persons learn how to use leisure, more time will be spent on leisure activities, he said. Luke Birky, Mennonite Board of Missions secretary for Health and Welfare, supports the idea of
older persons assuming new careers in retirement. “It’s tough for older people to make decisions in leadership,” he said, “but in some roles retired persons have remained creative and innovative as long as they live.” Birky cited examples of retired ministers who have effectively filled interim pastorates. He recalled the legacy of Allen H. Erb, health-care pioneer in the Mennonite Church, who retired from hospital administration in Colorado to found Lebanon Community Hospital in Oregon, attend college, remarry, and establish Schowalter Villa, a retirement community in Hesston, Kan. “He had a very young heart,” Birky commented. Persons are successful in retirement careers because they are willing to move, step down from former responsibilities at an appropriate time, he added. The long-range prospect for the higher retirement age is bright, Smith said, since in less than 25 years he sees a worker shortage hitting the USA. The worker shortage will come about, he said, because the baby boomers of the late 1940’s (now causing a bulge on the job market) will be retiring. The present fertility rate of 1.8 per cent per woman is less than is needed to simply keep the population from declining. Other factors which will create a lesser work forced include a leveling-out of the number of married women who work outside the home — currently almost one half of all married women. That percentage will come to an end somewhere, he said. In the future we will probably see more husband-wife teams holding parttime jobs, rather than one fulltime or two full-time jobs. And persons retiring at age 55 will continue to expand retirement career and leisure-time activities. “We’ll need all the good workers we’ve got,” he said. “And we’ll have to find more ways of increasing job interest. Not everybody will be satisfied to turn the machine off at 3:30 and say ‘that’s it’.” During the Middle Ages, baths were usually taken only on a doctor's request!
'What really is margarine'
In the last year many new margarine-like products have been added to the refrigerator section in the local grocery store. Most consumers are aware of the new products, but they’re wondering which ones are the real margarines. Many times it looks like, tastes like and spreads like the real thing - butter - but it’s margarine. Spreads or imitation margarine are not the same as margarine. To help the consumer the federal government has standards of identity for margarine. By weight margarine must include 80 per cent edible fat of either animal or vegetable origin. The ingredient label will tell the origin of the fat as well as listing ingredients in decreasing order of the amount present. As consumers you are paying for this labeling information, so take time and read it. While reading

Garden Truths You Need To Know
Haphazard gardening may bring you the results you want, but chances are against it. If you know the essentials about gardening, you won’t be mystified and frustrated by what your plants do or don’t do. This holds for both the new gardener and the experienced one, who needs reminders from time to time. In Ortho’s new book, “Fundamentals of Gardening,” the gardening truths are put down clearly and concisely— then expanded to answer your various needs. What are these essentials for good gardening? For one thing, the book stresses the importance of air in the soil. A good point because air is something you don’t see and probably never even think about as being in the ground. But if you have a plant that’s struggling to survive in heavy compacted soil (common with clay soils), there’s probably not enough air around the roots. When roots don’t function,. your plant is in trouble. Too heavy or too light soil \ can easily '■') •. v be changed. . Overwatering clogs the air spaces in heavy soil. Underwatering results in hard crusting of the soil so that when you finally do water, the water runs off instead of penetrating to the roots.

keep in mind the first ingredient listed is present in the largest amount. Products which do not meet the standard of identity for margarine must be given another name such as “spread” or “imitation margarine.” If you are watching your weight you may want to pay special attention to diet margarine. A diet margarine may have the first ingredient listed as water and contain about half the number of calories. Some spreads contain less than 80 per cent fat. The first ingredient listed on the list will be partially hydrogenated oil, but the product will have less fat and less calories per unit weight than margarines. Whipped margarines usually have 80 per cent fat by weight, but have less fat and fewer calories per unit volume than regular margarine because of the
What’s to be done? After presenting each problem, Ortho's “Fundamentals of Gardening” goes on to give you one or more solutions. For example, it briefs you on how to amend heavy soil so it won’t compact and give plants a hard time—and how to amend light soil (which is more porous) so you don’t spend all your time watering. With the air/soil problem solved, what about the Water supply? This must be provided on a regular schedule. A lot of plants can be put on the same schedule, as you’ll find after some experience. But with other plants, other schedules. Both flowers and vegetables let you know when they need water. The book lists a number of plants and their needs, so you’ll catch on fast. You’ll be able to anticipate your plants’ moisture requirements, which is better than waiting for their signals, which may come too late. Then, there’s the fundamental of feeding. How much? How often? What kind of plant food? The book sets you straight on this complex problem in less than half a page. “Fundamentals of Gardening” shows you the sighs your plant will exhibit when it needs more nutrition. And, the book offers good feeding habits, so that your plants won’t have to show any malnutrition symptoms at all. In addition, exactly what to feed your plants, and how to apply plant food is clearly discussed. The book takes first things first—the essentials of air, water, and nutrients — then proceeds in detail to your everyday needs for successful, enjoyable gardening.

air whipped into them. Usually one and one half sticks of whipped margarine equal the weight of one stick of regular margarine. When baking with whipped margarines, stick to products which give substitution charts. Many consumers, reading labels on margarine, will find partially hydrogenated vegetable oil listed. Margarine is hydrogenated to keep the fat firm at room temperature. The hydrogenation of the margarine involves adding hydrogen atoms to the unsaturated fatty acids. This makes the unsaturated fatty acids saturated or hydrogenated. With more people becoming weight conscious and controlling the amount of saturated fat, vegetable oils are sometimes added after hydrogenation. This is done to increase the percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids. These special margarines are softer than regular margarines and are usually sold in tubs. However the shape in which margarine is bought (tubs or sticks) does not determine the content of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The polyunsaturated fatty acid content can only be determined if it is stated on the nutritional label. Margarines highest in polyunsaturates usually state "vegetable oil” first on the ingredient list. If nutritional labeling is on the package, the total grams of fat per serving must be listed. The information concerning grams per serving of cholesterol, polyunsaturated fat and saturated fat is optional. So for consumers to know which one is the real margarine, they need to read labels and then use this information for proper selection.

Fithian's office to make area stops
Congressman Floyd Fithian’s Office on Wheels will make stops in Kosciusko and Marshall Counties later this week. The mobile office serves as a problem-solving center and as a forum through which second district residents can express their opinions on current issues. Citizens can drop by to share their thoughts or explain their problems with the federal bureaucracy to a member of Fithian’s staff, who will relay their messages to the Congressman in Washington. “I’ve always been deeply concerned about staying in touch with the needs of the people I represent,” Fithian explained. “Since our district covers more than 5,000 square miles, the Office on Wheels is the only way to reach people in every community. It’s one way of bringing Washington closer to Indiana.” The Office on Wheels will make the following visits on Thursday and Friday: Thursday, April 27 — Kosciusko County, 8 to 8:45 a m.. North Webster, Rinker’s Dept. Store; 9 to 9:45 a.m., Syracuse, across from bank, E. Main St.; 10 to 10:45
