Charles Frederick (Fred) Clark, Jr., part owner and manager of the M & M Restaurant in North Webster, is offering a new service to friends and neighbors in the community. Every Saturday night, starting at 8:30 p.m., a group of evangelistic singers perform for the listening enjoyment of Christians who want to have a night out. Judy Clark, who with husband Fred and Fred’s parents, Fred, Sr., and Bea, own the restaurant, says this service, which started March 11, has been a ‘'blessing” so far. “It does not make a statement on how we feel about the Lord and our service to bornagain Christians. We felt it could have an outreach for unsaved and for those who are hungry for the Lord and for Christians who want to feel uplifted.” So far, four different groups have performed. Mrs. Gary (Melody) Powers, Winona Lake, was featured March 11 and 18. Following her was the Second Celebration Singers, Bunker Hill, March 25; Call and Andy and

Spiritual Saturday nights out begin
Friends, North Webster, April 1; and Christiari Cavaliers, Columbus, April 8. The concert scheduled for April 15, The Embers, South Bend, had to be cancelled. Each group presents a program lasting one hour and 15 minutes with a short intermission break. A small cover charge is requested which helps pay for the travel expenses of the singers. Reason Two-Fold Clark said his reasons for starting this service are two-fold. “I really think that Christians as a group of people need some place they can go and have a pleasant experience for the evening rather than television and movies,” he said, “a place where you could meet new people.” The other reason is to help bring more business into the restaurant. He commented, “I’m a businessman and if I am blessed by offering something which will bring in business. I will in turn be blessed. The money’s there, but that can’t be the primary motivation.” He said the program is designed for Christians, but all are welcome. “It’s really not entertainment, but it is entertaining.” Clark started working on the program last October and sent out letters to various groups asking about what type of program they present and their faith. He said, “It’s not that I scrutinize, but we want it to be a blessing. I’ve got to make sure the groups I get in are professional enough and have repertoire and can establish a rapport with the guests to last one hour and 15 minutes. ” He added, “I want to have a variety of songs, not all sound the same. We’ve tried to get groups that have been together long enough and are professional enough so a person could come every week and not find the same thing.” Clark has scheduled groups through July 8, with the exception of May 27 and July 1, because those fall over holiday week ends. All of the groups come from Indiana and Illinois. Lift Up Word Os Jesus The born-again Christian continued to say these programs

are not revivals or altar calls. He said, “All of the gospel groups we’re getting in here have the call of the Lord and salvation. Most of their programs are designed for revivals where emphasis is on bringing new people into the church. This is not our primary purpose, but it’s there.” He went on to say, “As far as making a lengthy altar call, that’s not the purpose of the program. The Lord’s going to do the saving anyway. The biggest share of the program is to lift up the word of Jesus. When you leave, you’ve got to feel good.” Reservations are made for the ,

shows ahead of time. The programs are presented in a separate dining room which seats 150 people. The response so far has been fair, said Clark, but he is sure it will grow, as the word of the programs gets around. During the summer, he would like to offer the programs outside in a pavillion in Clarksville, which is adjacent to the restaurant. There, over 1,000 people could listen to the groups sing in a picnic-styre relaxed atmosphere. One reason Clark gave on why the response hasn’t been as good as expected so far is because a lot of people are fearful of anything
